Summary

The Home Office is here to make the UK safer. Border Force is a Law Enforcement arm of the Home Office with primary responsibility for UK Border Security, including counter terrorism, immigration and customs matters.

We are responsible for handling the UK border control by implementing immigration and customs regulations and working with the wider Home Office on counter terrorism, organised crime, modern slavery and trafficking. Border Force has five operational regions in the UK: North, Central, Heathrow, South and South East & Europe. These regions have responsibility for securing the border 24 hours a day, 365 days a year at the UK’s 140 seaports, airports, 200+ general aviation ports, postal depots and international rail network. This includes the Eurostar from Brussels and Paris to St Pancras International and the Eurotunnel from Coquelles to Cheriton, where Border Force has juxtaposed controls.

Job description

The Inland Border Command (IBC) comprises of four key function areas within a large geographical area of the Central Region of Border Force, stretching from the Midlands to the Heathrow area (HWDC). The Border Force Operation in IBC comprises approximately 250 staff and includes Fast Parcels, Postal, Freight and Inland Clearance.

Because of the work we do and the places we work Border Force staff can operate in sometimes difficult and pressurised environments. For this role being adaptable and making well balanced decisions is key. A career in Border Force can be extremely rewarding and you will be supported through a training programme of several courses. Your training period is crucial to preparing you for your initial career as a Border Force Officer.

The ideal candidate will:

Responsibilities

  • Overseeing the handling of queries and complaints following VAT and Duty applied to parcels entering the UK
  • Completing case work activities associated with complaints following VAT and Duty applied to parcels entering the UK
  • Acting as workflow manager in turn with other officers and deliver a supervisory role to team assistant officers
  • Monitoring and completing team statistics
  • Developing and maintaining an effective working relationship with on-site processing teams and external stakeholders such as HM Revenue & Customs
  • Working alongside the team manager in the processing of MPs correspondence and compensation claims
  • Contributing to overall team performance to meeting agreed service level agreements and charter standards
  • Seeking guidance from policy leads to develop and sustain a good working knowledge of relevant legislation and departmental guidelines

Essential Criteria
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to be confident when working with the public
  • Experience as a team-player, supporting colleagues and team members to deliver key outcomes
  • The ability to plan, collaborate, and deliver, including through others, to short deadlines
  • Good written and verbal communication and data entry skills

  • Experience of working in a case work environment
