Summary

The Home Office is here to make the UK safer. Border Force is a Law Enforcement arm of the Home Office with primary responsibility for UK Border Security, including counter terrorism, immigration and customs matters.

We are responsible for handling the UK border control by implementing immigration and customs regulations and working with the wider Home Office on counter terrorism, organised crime, modern slavery and trafficking. Border Force has five operational regions in the UK: North, Central, Heathrow, South and South East & Europe. These regions have responsibility for securing the border 24 hours a day, 365 days a year at the UK’s 140 seaports, airports, 200+ general aviation ports, postal depots and international rail network. This includes the Eurostar from Brussels and Paris to St Pancras International and the Eurotunnel from Coquelles to Cheriton, where Border Force has juxtaposed controls.

Job description

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Business Analysis and Design team within the Border Systems and Change Delivery Directorate. Business Analysis is a key part of intelligent design which must sit at the heart of the Border Force Transformation supporting delivery and business change programmes.
The business analysts work on key Border Force initiatives, defining the set of changes that will get us there and working with and supporting change programmes and our operational business in delivering them.

It is open to those who are performing or have performed a business analyst role, who can demonstrate strong communication, analytical and decision-making skills. You will have the opportunity to upskill in a number of specialist and technical skills that will help you to progress in the business analysis field.

You will also have the opportunity to study towards a business analysis qualification.

Responsibilities

Working with experienced members of the analysis team and other business analysts you will be expected to be involved in a number of activities at any point in the project life-cycle, namely:

  • Business Process Mapping and Re-Engineering: You will work with stakeholders to investigate business problems and opportunities by mapping business processes and analysing areas for improvement, defining and recommending potential ‘to-be’ processes and assessing the associated changes required.

  • Requirements Gathering: You will work with key stakeholders to establish, document and gain an agreed and prioritised view of their requirements for business changes, ensuring their consistency and future traceability and that they provide a clear base-line from which delivery of a solution can commence.

  • Requirements Analysis: You will perform gap and impact analyses and assist in translating business requirements into functional and technical specifications, business procedures and products, from which appropriate solutions can be selected or enhanced, and against which future change requests can be assessed.

  • Tools and methodologies: You will use common tools and methodologies employed in the Business Analysis function including Agile project delivery, the use of Business Process Modelling Notation (BPMN) 2.0 process mapping, user stories, and other business techniques and modelling approaches as appropriate. You will be expected to upskill in the required tools and methodologies by working with other business analysts, gaining experience in the role and by attending training courses as appropriate.

  • Analysis community participation: You will actively engage with the wider Business Analysis and Design team within Border Force. You will maintain common standards of approach and documentation and share information in order to improve business process and enhance potential business benefits.

Essential Criteria
  • Strong communication skills as shown by practical experience such as engaging in meetings, presenting and facilitating workshops and obtaining and sharing information with colleagues.

  • Ability to produce documentation that conveys complex information in a simple and straightforward way, concisely and accurately.

  • Evidence of an analytical approach as demonstrated by an example(s) of a problem presented and the approach taken to arrive at a resolution.

  • Practical experience of business requirements for capture and articulation, documentation and user verification techniques.

  • Practical experience in the use and maintenance of business analysis tools and products (such as Unified Modeling Language (UML) or BPMN)

  • Proven experience in working with multiple stakeholders at all levels and challenging interpretations of business requirements and issues

Desirable Criteria
  • Practical experiences of working on a transformational change programme, including business and organisational design
  • Experience of working in an Agile environment
  • Experience of working in Border Force
