An exciting opportunity has arisen on Bramley Ward at Nottingham University Hospitals Trust for a Renal health care assistant, who is enthusiastic, motivated, caring and willing to develop their knowledge and ability. Bramley Ward is a busy and dynamic 20 bed acute renal ward, admitting both emergency and elective admissions. As a HCA on the ward you will be exposed to a vast range of renal replacement therapy, surgery and acutely unwell patients.

All staff have an individual responsibility for creating accurate records of their work and for making entries into and managing all NHS records effectively in line with the Health Record Keeping Policy and other Health Records and Corporate Records Management policies and procedures in order to meet the Trust’s legal, regulatory and accountability requirements.

As a healthcare assistant on Bramley you will be expected to be able to demonstrate commitment to the trusts values and behaviours, be able to demonstrate clear and effective written and verbal communication skills with all members of the multi-disciplinary team, have the ability to pass on information accurately and in a timely manner, possess a good telephone manner and be able to demonstrate good computer and literacy skills. Previous experience in an acute health care setting is desirable but not essential as full training will be undertaken.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

As a health care assistant on Bramley ward, you will be required to carry out a number of designated tasks for our complex and specialised renal patients of which will involve direct care, in support of and under the supervision of a registered nurse.

These daily tasks include working as an effective member of the multi-disciplinary team.

Following appropriate training and assessments, undertaking clinical and non-clinical duties in support of the registered nurse.

Assisting patients in taking medications under the supervision of registered staff.

Participate in the treatment and rehabilitation of patients as required.

Direct and escort patients and visitors around the clinic/ward and to other departments

Report back to registered staff all concerns about the patient’s condition

Take all reasonable steps to ensure the safe-keeping of patients’ property, in accordance with Patients’ Property Procedure.

Be aware of the need for confidentiality both in the written and spoken word.

Comply with all Trust policies with particular regard to the policies and procedures carried out in the event of maintaining staff and patient safety.

Report all accidents and untoward incidents to the nurse in charge of the area and complete an incident form in accordance with Trust policy.

Report problems with equipment and facilities to the nurse in charge

Be prepared to attend and undertake any necessary training, being aware of the

need to develop oneself and to strive to increase personal knowledge.


Undertake any ‘Working in New Ways Packages’, which have been identified by the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse and are integral to the role requirements and specialty area. Under normal circumstances these must be completed in accordance with the ‘Working in New Way’s Policy and Guidelines

Assisting the registered staff with taking and recording patients’ temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure and completing patient fluid balance charts. Assisting with meeting the dietary needs of patients which will include distribution of drinks and meals and helping patients to eat and drink as required. Make verbal reports to senior nursing staff regarding the patients in the ward as necessary, following this up with written documentation as needed. Ensure that patients are helped to retain their dignity and individuality.

Salary: The quoted salary will be on a pro rata basis for part time workers.

  • Disclosure and Barring Service: Your post maybe subject to a DBS check which incur a cost dependent on the level of check required (£45 for enhanced and £28 for standard). I agree to reimburse Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust the cost of a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check if it is required (by deduction from first month’s pay).
