NUH Pathology is looking for an enthusiastic and motivated medical laboratory assistant to join our experienced Blood Transfusion and Haematology Team. The ideal candidate will have previous laboratory experience and keen attention to detail and good communication skills.

The role of a Medical Laboratory Assistant is varied and involves providing support to the blood transfusion, Haematology and the antenatal serology screening Laboratory.

Main duties of the job

Work includes clerical tasks such as data input of patient demographics and test request information, monitoring and maintenance of laboratory equipment, the post holder will also be expected to answer telephone enquiries and perform sample reception duties as well as general housekeeping.

We expect you to be a passionate, self-motivated individual who has an organised approach to work with good attention to detail and who can remain calm when busy. You will possess well developed communication and observational skills and enjoy working as part of a team so together we can provide excellent care and quality in a challenging environment.

Previous experience in an NHS clinical laboratory or in analytical techniques would be an advantage but is not essential as full training will be provided. A good level of secondary education is required with English, Maths and Science to GCSE (Grade A-D) or equivalent.

Working for our organisation

Our Pathology service operates across two large university teaching hospitals (Queens Medical Centre (QMC) and Nottingham City Hospitals (NCH)). The Transfusion laboratory serves specialties including a Haemophilia Comprehensive Care Centre, BMT unit, cardiology, ITU, maternity, children’s hospital and a large ED department with the major trauma unit for the Trent region.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1. Perform sample reception duties including receiving, sorting, labelling, bar coding and racking of samples on arrival
2. Load samples onto centrifuges, pre-analytical automation, tracking systems or other sample preparation equipment
3. File, archive and retrieve samples, dispatch samples to referral sites as appropriate
4. Perform clerical tasks including data input of patient demographics and request details and the filing, copying and retrieval of request forms
5. Where applicable, accurately enter results or other information onto the Pathology IT system
6. Answer telephone enquiries and perform visitor reception duties
7. Perform general house-keeping duties including safe disposal of waste, general cleaning and tidying and laundry management
8. Perform basic laboratory equipment cleaning and maintenance
9. Maintain stocks of laboratory supplies including ensuring adequate supplies of general laboratory items
10. Prepare simple solutions, reagents and quality control materials
11. Distribute request forms, sample bottles and other consumables to users
12. Assist in the supervision and training of new and less experienced staff as appropriate
13. Participate in, review and evaluate personal learning and training activities via the Personal Development Review process
14. Comply with Trust policies and national legislation regarding confidentiality of patient information, the Data Protection Act 1998 and Health and safety law.
15. Work flexibly and undertake any other duties commensurate with the grade as required.
16. Participate in Joint Annual Personal Development Review with line Managers.
