Full-time:35 hours per week

Open-ended: permanent

We are looking for an enthusiastic Farm Animal Technician / Stockperson to work within our new state of the art Large Animal Research and Imaging Facility (LARIF) and farm based on Edinburgh University Easter Bush Campus. www.ed.ac.uk/roslin/facilities-resources/larif

The Opportunity:

The post will work within the dedicated team of Research Assistants, Veterinary Anaesthetists, Stockpersons, Radiographers and Researchers conducting a range of world class research involving farm animals (predominantly sheep, pigs and cattle). This post will suit a well-organised individual, with knowledge or experience in farm animal husbandry and procedures, along with data recording. Agricultural experience or qualification, with experience in farm animal husbandry is essential. Tractor and field work would be an advantage. The candidate must be willing to become involved in all areas of large animal work across the Estate. The post holder is expected to live on the Easter Bush Estate within the tied accommodation provided.

Your skills and attributes for success:

  • To be able to provide all aspects of animal husbandry care to a range of species including sheep, cattle, pigs, and other large animal species.
  • To be able to carry out other farm related activities where needed, duties involved in the care and maintenance of the facilities and equipment associated with animal care. Tractor driving and Forklift operation are essential for these associated tasks.
  • To conduct a range of specialist Home Office licenced and non-licenced procedures on large animals. Preparation of animals for surgical procedures including animal habituation, provide technical support and provide post-operative care for large animals.
  • Have the ability to collect biological sample as directed by the scientific protocols written for project work. Samples may need to be collected from offsite facilities such as abattoirs on a regular and planned basis.
