Job description

Summary We are looking for a Gardener to join our team at Upton House.


You’ll be passionate about growing and cultivating plants, whilst learning to train them in a 1930’s style to reflect the garden heritage. You’ll ensure the garden is shown off in the best possible way, from assisting with general maintenance to following a design plan for one of the many herbaceous borders.

What it’s like to work here Working in a team with 3 other Gardeners, you’ll report to our Head Gardener, and work in a south facing terraced garden, where you’ll grow your passion for horticulture with our diverse range of plants, including Heritage Plant collection of Asters and Symphyotrichum cultivars, a vast Kitchen Garden and annual display of bulbs and plants.?


It’s an exciting time to join our team at Upton, as the mansion has now been classed as a ‘Treasure House’ this will transform the property, to show off the best of the collections of both Art and plants, in a totally different light.

What you’ll be doing As a hands-on Gardener, you’ll take ownership of specific areas of the garden ensuring the highest standards are maintained and healthy plants are available for our visitors to enjoy.


You’ll perform a range of practical horticultural tasks to develop, enhance and conserve the garden and contribute to the delivery of projects. You’ll be helping with hard and soft landscaping and general maintenance of the garden, such as mulching, pruning, leaf clearing and weeding.


You’ll support with the planting and maintenance of trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants, as well as the mowing of our lawns and cutting of Yew hedgerows on a regular basis, so you’ll need to be competent with the use of pedestrian and ride on mowers and small machinery.?


You’ll also support garden volunteers and help them to make the most of their time here. You’ll be expected to interact with the public, answering questions, or helping out with gardening workshops, tours and events when needed.

Who we’re looking for

To be successful in this role you should be able to demonstrate the below:

  • Trained as a professional gardener/horticulturalist with a good level of practical experience.
  • RHS Level 2 or equivalent.
  • Have proven practical gardening/horticulture experience, as well as a strong knowledge of plants
  • Confidence to participate in garden activities and events
  • Competence with machinery/equipment use and maintenance; including tractors, chainsaws, and pedestrian mowers with accreditation as required for Health and Safety compliance.
