The success of the individual will impact on the ability of Dstl to deliver high quality impartial advice and assurance to all of its customers, academia, industry and international counterparts.

In This Role You Will
  • Work with stakeholders to develop, lead and deliver high impact studies in EOIR Land Signatures
  • Design, develop, implement & maintain new capabilities to provide key advice to the MOD
  • Be the Dstl focus for EOIR Land signatures across the lab, amongst academia and industry and with our international partners
  • Provide SME input to support signatures representation in Operational Analysis
  • Be an expert user of relevant software modelling packages including CameoSim and TAIThermIR
  • Be expected to develop and use a broad network of both internal and external specialists across Dstl to solve complex and non-routine problems
  • Be an enthusiastic problem solver who can define, develop and utilise software and hardware tools to address questions in a fast-evolving area of Defence
  • Develop a fundamental understanding of the Land war-fighting environment to understand how signatures impact survivability
Lead on the development and execution of EO and IR band research to enable the delivery of high quality outputs in a timely fashion.
  • Work effectively as part of the wider Land Signatures and Land Survivability teams on a number of studies.
  • Build and maintain good internal and external relationships.
  • Support the delivery of complex interdisciplinary projects.
  • Build effective networks across Dstl and the wider technical community.
  • Develop new ideas for improving capability, and see them to fruition.
Responsibilities

The role supports classified projects relating to in-service and future novel platforms and technologies.
  • You will be responsible for the collection and production of data, presentations, reports and other outputs which are of satisfactory quality and timeliness and to present results in an appropriate manner.
  • You will be responsible for supporting project managers in developing and maintaining budgets for the work you lead.

Technical Skills

Essential Qualifications
  • Degree in a mathematical, scientific or analytical discipline or
  • Demonstrable, relevant experience in place of a degree qualification
Essential Skills
  • Ability to translate customer requirements into research proposals.
  • Excellent communication skills to create effective professional relationships with scientific, analytical, military and international partners.
  • Good planning skills with the ability to establish clear pathways and contingencies to goal completion.
  • Highly IT literate with ability to use software packages such as Matlab and Blender to support data analysis and modelling.
  • Ability to lead and influence a small technical team to complete tasks.
  • Ability to act as a mentor to develop wider capability within the team.
Essential Experience
  • The applicant should demonstrate an expert knowledge of EO and IR signatures preferably in the Land domain.
  • Experience of field data collection methods for EO and IR bands
  • Ability to select and use appropriate analysis techniques to answer research questions.
  • Experience of planning and delivering studies
  • Experience of writing reports and giving presentations.
  • Experience of the CameoSim software package.

Work location
Dstl is strongly encouraging blended and flexible working either at one of our sites or from home or both. We want to empower you to undertake your duties at the most appropriate location for the task, however you will be allocated a Dstl site as a base. You may be required to travel to other Dstl and MoD sites as required.
