Job content

We are looking to recruit a highly motivated Clinical Fellow (ST3+ equivalent) to join our expanding team. This is an excellent opportunity to gain greater Haematology knowledge and experience. The main focus of this post is on the management of day case and outpatients. There will also be plenty of opportunity to participate in the teaching on medical students and to participate in research within our clinical trials team. This post is initially for 12 months fixed term with the potential to renew.

It is expected that the individual will support clinics and the day unit and develop chemotherapy prescribing skills (if not already competent). They will support the department to develop clinical research activity. The post holder will be expected to support the teaching and training of the South West peninsula medical students.

The service is run on an attending basis with the on-call consultant overseeing all inpatient care for the week on-call. All Consultants provide generalist services but there is increasing subspecialisation as listed below. The Department provides level 2B haematological cancer services providing treatment for adult leukaemia, intensive chemotherapy for lymphoma, and autologous bone marrow transplantation as part of the South West Peninsula bone marrow transplant service (JACIE accredited - Torbay, Plymouth and Truro). Weekly video-conferences are run with Derriford Hospital to allow cancer MDT and transplant MDT discussions. There is a non-malignant MDT run fortnightly.

Turner ward is a 17 bed dedicated Haematology/Oncology inpatient facility with 4 HEPA filtered rooms. There is a dedicated Haematology/Oncology day unit adjacent to the inpatient facility. Outpatient clinics are currently run from both Torquay and Newton Abbot sites so a car or the ability to drive would be advantageous. There is nurse specialist support to all clinics. In addition patients are followed up by non-face to face appointments and several remote tracking clinics exist.

The department has an active undergraduate and postgraduate education focus with year 4 and 5 medical student attachments. The department has a reputation for excellent recruitment to national haematological cancer trials and is currently recruiting to 10 clinical trials, with many additional ones in follow up (20+).
