We are looking for dynamic, motivated newly qualified midwives with UK NMC registration to join our progressive team. If you wish to provide excellent compassionate care for women and babies in the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal period NUH is the place to work.

We have a robust 18 month preceptorship programme. You will get comprehensive training, pastoral and clinical support from our experienced maternity education team. You will gain experience in both community and acute hospital settings.

Main duties of the job

The band 5 midwife will assess, implement and evaluate care delivered, so that the women’s individual requirements for care are met in all aspects of midwifery. They will act as an advocate for women and develop skills required to manage own workload appropriately i.e. ability to prioritise.

They will practice in accordance with professional, ethical and legal framework for midwifery and work within Trust guidelines, policies and procedures when carrying out midwifery care.

They will undertake excellent midwifery practice consistent with research and evidence-based practice transferring and applying knowledge and skills to meet the needs of mothers and families.

The post holder will be required to deliver safe, quality midwifery care, antenatally, intrapartum and postnatally to women and their families whilst developing key skills, abilities and experience as a Midwife. Working with support from senior midwives but within the multidisciplinary team and complying with Trust policies and guidelines.

The post holder will work across QMC Campus/City Campus/Community.

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Communication and Team Working

Facilitate and maintain effective communication within the multi-disciplinary team in order to promote effective patient care.

Adhere to appropriate NMC and local Standards for written documentation and storage of records. Ensure maintenance of patient and colleague confidentiality at all times.

Deal appropriately with positive and negative feedback from women, recognising the wider implications for ward, unit and Trust.

Participate in decision-making in relation to women-centred care and development of practice within the ward, unit and multidisciplinary team. Actively involved in change.

Be an active member of both ward and wider multi-disciplinary team, developing confidence in own role and encouraging development of others and contribution to team cohesion.

To communicate effectively, sensitive and personal issues maintaining confidentiality at all times.

To identify and manage challenging behaviours.

Clinical Care

To assess, implement and evaluate care delivered, so that the women’s individual requirements for care are met in all aspects of midwifery. Obtain informed consent throughout.

Act as an advocate for women.

Develop skills required to manage own workload appropriately i.e. ability to prioritise, time management, delegation.

Practice in accordance with professional, ethical and legal framework for midwifery.

To work within Trust guidelines, policies and procedures when carrying out midwifery care. Have opportunity to be involved in their development, implementation and evaluation.

Undertake midwifery practice consistent with evidence based practice transferring and applying knowledge and skills to meet the needs of mothers and families.

Personal and Professional Conduct

Be responsible for maintaining and enhancing personal and professional development and providing evidence of competency to enable the formulation of a PDP. Work within NMC professional code of conduct at all times and Midwives Code and Standards for Practice.

Ensure Trust Policy and Procedure adhered to including Health and Safety legislation, administration and storage of drugs, clinical incident reporting, infection control, child protection, and safekeeping of patient’s property.

Act as role model and support professional development of all students and junior staff. Contribute to a positive learning environment.

Resource/Change Management

Ensure effective use of resources. Responsible for co-ordinating shift on day to day basis.

Participates in innovation and implementation of change.

Develops leadership and supervision skills for both qualified and unqualified staff during the preceptorship period.

Effective use of time, and resource management.

Research/Education

Teach and support unqualified staff including student nurses, midwives and MSWs.

Complete appropriate documentation for learners when acting in the role of practice assessor.

To assist in the orientation of new staff/Return to Practice midwives.

Participate in evaluation of education programmes, offered within the Maternity Unit.

Participate in the education audit of the clinical areas.

Use, develop and share evidence based practice to carry out care competently and efficiently.

Participate in clinical audit/trials and collection of data for improving women’s care as appropriate e.g. patient satisfaction surveys.

Participate in benchmarking within clinical area supporting the introduction of a change in practice if indicated.

Salary: The quoted salary will be on a pro rata basis for part time workers.
