The Planning Service aims to proactively plan to help shape the City over the short,medium, and longer, balancing the need for new homes and jobs against the need to protect the heritage and green environment. We are now embarking on a new phase of regeneration and placemaking as we progress with our new Local Plan.


This is an exciting and challenging opportunity for enthusiastic Graduates, to be a part of the City Council’s drive to provide work experience and develop career paths in Planning. Working under the guidance of Planners and Senior Planners, you’ll undertake town planning work specialising in specific areas in accordance with statutory functions, legislation, and guidelines and within overall local objectives and policy.


Based at City Hall, you’ll be required to on occasions work across the City to attend meetings with key stakeholders, customers, and clients, or to attend court.


This is a Full time, Fixed term Graduate post for 12 months initially, working 37 hours per week from Monday to Friday. There may an opportunity to extend the 12-month fixed contract by a further 11 months subject to further assessment and progression of pay.


Your role

As a Graduate Planner, you’ll assist with both minor and major developments and other planning work in either the Development Management and Enforcement Team, who deal with applications, contraventions and correspondence, or the Policy Team who manage the new Local Plan. You’ll be required to undertake site inspections, surveys, research, negotiations, and engage in public participation. You’ll draft reports which assess the material planning considerations relevant to individual proposals as well as deal effectivelywith queries from members of the public regarding planning, the application process and your own case work.


What you’ll need

Having graduated within the last 2 years, or due to graduate this summer with a Degree or Diploma in Town Planning or Urban Design that is accredited by the Royal Town Planning Institution, you’ll have a good understanding of planning objectives and principles applicable to development management. Using excellent written and verbal communication skills, you’ll process applications, carry out publicity and consultations, negotiate with applicants, write reports and make recommendations. With the ability to work effectively on your own initiative and as part of a team, you’ll be able to deal with challenging individuals and groups in a calm, diplomatic, professional manner.
