About the job:

Are you a creative and innovative manager? Would you like to improve the education of young children in Leicester? We are looking for a highly motivated and confident Bookstart Co-ordinator to coordinate the delivery of our Bookstart programme.

Run in partnership with the Booktrust, an independent national charity, this scheme aims to provide a free pack of books and resources to every baby and child in England, to inspire, stimulate and create a love of reading. By encouraging all parents and carers to enjoy books with children from as early an age as possible, the Booktrust aims to help children develop a lifelong love of books.

This job is based at Fosse Centre, in Neighbourhood Services (libraries and community centres). However, with our New Ways of Working, occasional visits to other locations such as various Neighbourhood Services sites and Children’s Centres may be required. There is also the option to work some hours from home if suited, in which case a computer, telephone equipment and work mobile will be provided.

This position is a fixed term contract over 8 months working 22.5 hours. The salary will be at a prorated rate. If successful, interviewing will take place week commencing Monday 9th August.

Your role:

As a Bookstart Co-ordinator, you’ll lead and develop our Bookstart project work managing a team of four, whilst working alongside other stakeholders including the Booktrust Regional Co-ordinator and the city council’s Early Help Service to ensure the effective delivery of our Bookstart programme. This will involve supporting the design of a literacy programme for young children and their parents/carers, utilising £200,000 per year of resources provided to the local authority by Booktrust and delivered in community settings to encourage greater participation.

You’ll be responsible for assisting in the development of a strategy to help parents/carers to acquire skills in supporting their children with language and literacy development and getting them ready for school. The work you do will ultimately add value for children and their parents/carers across Leicester City.

What you’ll need:

As a Bookstart Co-ordinator you’ll be an organised, attentive individual with the ability to manage people. You’ll need to have previous experience working in early years settings and knowledge of early years development. You’ll have the ability to creatively increase participation and encourage a love for language, books and stories amongst the younger generation.
