Science and Technology Facilities Council
Salary: £16,215
Hours: Full time
Contract Type:Fixed Term
Location:Science and Technology Facilities Council, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory Harwell, Oxfordshire

The ISIS Neutron & Muon Source is a world-leading centre for research in the physical and life sciences at the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory near Oxford in the United Kingdom. Our suite of neutron and muon instruments gives unique insights into the properties of materials at the atomic scale. We support a national and international community of more than 3000 scientists for research into subjects ranging from clean energy and the environment, pharmaceuticals and health care, through to nanotechnology and materials engineering, catalysis and polymers and on to fundamental studies of materials.

The Molecular Spectroscopy Group at ISIS develops and operates four neutron spectrometers that, between them, span an energy range equivalent to the microwave to the vacuum ultraviolet in the electromagnetic spectrum. They are used to study systems as diverse as the diffusion of biomolecules, to characterise drugs, how molecules bind to catalysts and quantum effects in materials, to name a few.

Summary of Key Duties and Responsibilities

One area of active industrial and academic study is carbon-based materials, such as graphene, graphene-oxide, reduced graphene oxide and activated carbon. These have uses as diverse as fillers for automotive tyres, improved sports equipment and catalyst supports. Neutron vibrational spectroscopy (inelastic neutron scattering, INS) enables the materials to be characterised and over the last few years a large body of data has been acquired of a wide range of these materials. The aim of this studentship is to finish this project.

To this end, the student will:

  • Measure infrared and Raman spectra of the materials and participate in the analysis of the spectra.
  • Measure room temperature X-ray diffraction patterns of the materials and analyse them.
  • Measure hydrogen adsorption isotherms of carbon-supported palladium catalysts.

The benefits to the student are that they will have gained a comprehensive understanding of vibrational spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, catalyst characterisation and co-authored at least one publication.

In order to apply for the role we are looking for the following:

Essential

  • Are in full time education at university and returning to university/studies following the placement
  • The right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the placement
  • Knowledge and understanding of physical chemistry
  • Experience of writing-up and presenting experimental results

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of infrared and/or Raman spectroscopy
  • Knowledge of powder X-ray diffraction
  • Knowledge of catalysis

Part of our application process involves submitting your CV and a cover letter. Your cover letter should address your suitability for the opportunity based how you meet each essential criteria stated in this advert.

We would recommend you to submit your application as soon as possible as we reserve the right to close this vacancy once we have received sufficient applications.

  • Please note, we can only accept a maximum of 2 applications per candidate.

About The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC)

As one of Europe’s largest research organisations, we ask the biggest questions in the universe to find answers that change the world around us. We seek understanding. We’re proud of the impact we make. And we’re committed to helping build a globally competitive, knowledge-based UK economy. Being part of all this means contributing to work that pushes boundaries and creates possibilities. You’ll work with, and learn from, true experts. Whatever your role, you’ll be free to question, and encouraged to share ideas. And, in a positive and supportive culture, you’ll discover just what a difference you can make when you’re equipped and inspired to excel.

We’re a place where curious minds thrive. Not bound by profit, we explore ideas that others don’t, ask questions that others won’t, and discover answers that others are not equipped to find. And, alongside Mars landings and black holes, we also explore diverse, international projects in everything from science and engineering to computing and technology. Whether it’s at the cutting edge or behind the scenes, our work is intellectually challenging. It’s very often ground-breaking. And it’s endlessly, irresistibly fascinating.
