About the role
Maintain and manage STFC (Science and Technology Facilities Council) environments – on premises and in the cloud - in accordance with industry best practice and ITIL standards.
Provide second line support to the business, ensuring servers and underlying IT systems are available for use, working closely with other members of the team to ensure services are delivered efficiently and effectively.
The role owners play a vital role in progressing the groups IT Strategy and requires flexibility and versatility when it comes to designing, building, and maintaining our technology stack.
- Manage Group Policy and Active Directory structure.
- Run on premises infrastructure (Hyper-V clusters, Windows server, Kemp load balancers, SAN Storage and Backup).
- Administer infrastructure services in Microsoft 365 / Azure such as Exchange Online.
- Microsoft IIS and SQL Server administration.
- Deliver BAU activities (e.g. daily checks, patching, backup, performance monitoring).
- Troubleshoot problems, make proposals for improvements, and implement them.
- Review releases, upgrades, and fixes available from system software suppliers.
- Follow STFC DI (Digital Infrastructure) Change Management processes when undertaking change.
- Ensure that good security practice is followed
- Contribute to the development of Disaster Recover/Business Continuity plans.
- Produce and maintain documentation for technical teams and end-users.
Essential Criteria:
- Systems Administrator Experience (Microsoft Server 2012 and higher/Linux)
- MCSA Qualified or equivalent experience
- Microsoft 365 / Azure and Microsoft on premise
- Load balancers
- Backup technology
- PowerShell
- Strong team working ability
- Able to communicate to all levels of staff, both verbally and in writing
Desirable Criteria:
- ITIL
- Certificate Services
- Familiar with Dell hardware
- ITIL Foundation
- Basic networking knowledge
- Creating and maintaining system documentation
- Information Security principles and practices.
- Strong knowledge of enterprise grade infrastructure both on premise and within cloud environments
- Specific Technical Experience
- Nutanix virtualisation
- VDI implementation
- Veritas backup systems
Ideally this role would be located at the Harwell Campus in Oxfordshire, but we would consider applications to be located at the Daresbury Lab in Cheshire for the right candidate.
