About the role
We have an exciting opportunity for a Scientific Officer to join Oxford Cancer, a city-wide research initiative and partnership between Oxford University, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust, Thames Valley Cancer Alliance and the Oxfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group. We seek to harness Oxford’s world-leading cancer research from our growing network of 1,000+ members who are working in cancer-related fields. This network covers a range of disciplines, all with the core aim of facilitating collaboration to ensure rapid translation of scientific discovery to treatments for patients.
An important part of Oxford Cancer’s activity is the establishment and management of laboratories, services and facilities used by a variety of cancer researchers working on cutting edge, innovative and high impact projects. Collaborators include academics at Oxford and across the UK, as well as commercial and industry partners.
This role will be responsible for developing, delivering and managing an Oxford-wide strategy for cancer big data and working with academics and clinicians to develop funding proposals to ensure its delivery. This will involve managing and developing funding proposals for new programmes spanning a diverse array of data science focussed projects, from the access and use of Electronic Health Records (EHR), digital pathology, clinical imaging, digital image analysis and multi-parametric molecular phenotyping.
You will be required to develop and maintain a governance structure that integrates the views of senior data scientists and stakeholders across Oxford to develop a research strategy that focuses on Oxford’s distinctive capabilities in the field. You will provide day-to-day oversight and technical management of a portfolio of big data focussed cancer research projects and programmes, including being responsible for the monitoring and delivery of key project milestones and outcomes, and plan and deliver a series of events that brings the community together and showcases Oxford’s flagship programmes to project our leadership position in the field. You will also support the writing of novel collaborative big data focussed funding applications and offer expert advice to Principal Investigators on aspects of the application process, including managing collaborative applications, addressing risk management, research agreements and intellectual property matters.
This is a full-time post (although part-time hours at a minimum of 80% FTE will be considered) based at Oxford Cancer, New Richards Building, Headington, Oxford, OX3 7LA, and is available on a three-year fixed term contract.
About you
You must hold (or be near to completing) a PhD/DPhil in a cancer relevant field with a focus on big data. You will have previous experience of managing technical or data-intensive cancer research projects, together with demonstrable experience in coordinating, preparing, and writing research funding applications. You will have experience of communicating science to a wide range of audiences and excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact equally effectively with senior academic staff, researchers and support staff within the University. Experience of coordinating complex inter-disciplinary multi-investigator research or infrastructure funding applications would be advantageous.
Application Process
You will be required to upload a supporting statement (setting out how you meet the selection criteria), a curriculum vitae and the names and contact details of two referees as part of your online application.
Only applications received by 12pm GMT on Thursday 12 January 2023 will be considered.
Interviews are expected to take place week commencing 30 January 2023. Applicants should be available to attend during this time.
Informal enquiries about the role can be sent to jackie.fellows@medsci.ox.ac.uk
