Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Occupational Therapist to join our Specialist Neuro and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Rehabilitation Service. This is a highly experienced inter-professional service, supporting clients following Traumatic Brain Injury, whilst working alongside the wider outpatient service supporting acquired brain injury and other long-term neurological conditions.

This post is a 13-month fixed term contract or internal/external secondment. The post is full time however applications requesting part time hours will be considered.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will provide an Outreach Occupational Therapy service to assess and treat clients post moderate to severe Traumatic Brain Injury, as referred by the specialist case managers. Assessment skills including standardised cognitive assessment, functional assessment, and awareness of a range neurological techniques to promote rehabilitation will be required. The candidate will lead the process in terms of return to work preparation and overall vocational rehabilitation process. The team includes a Therapy Practitioner who will support the delivery of rehabilitation interventions with Occupational Therapy guidance and supervision.

The ability to form good working relationships with the wider multi-disciplinary team and ability to adopt a multi-agency approach is essential. The service provides community-based interventions in a range of locations including clients home environment, workplace, general local community, and out-patient clinic areas. For this reason, being a car user is essential for the role.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Core responsibilities include, but not limited to;

To provide timely assessment and treatment with regard to ADL intervention, community re-integration and return to work skills for these clients, and where appropriate to their carers or colleagues.

To act as a specialist advisor and provide education and training for staff who provide services for clients with traumatic brain injury.

Undertake evidence based highly comprehensive assessment and treatment of patients including those with complex presentation, including conflicting social and psychological information, using investigative and analytical skills having a flexible approach to the delivery of care.

To treat clients who require occupational therapy intervention in the most appropriate environment including their home, local community, workplace, and outpatient setting.

To provide advice and education to individuals, carers and colleagues regarding the effect of traumatic brain injury on ADL activities, community re-integration, and returning to work.

To ensure that the occupational therapy service is client focused and tailored to individual person’s needs. To promote self-management enabling them to recognise and maximise their potential outcomes and empowering them to make choices about their future management.

Awareness and oversight of the patients on the team’s caseload that will require advanced practitioner intervention and provide direct support to junior staff.

Ensure that high quality, evidenced based practice, service development and education underpin the service delivery.

Support the professional development of students and junior members of the team through the development of a program of specialist teaching and mentorship.

  • Additional duties will include participation in a weekend working rota (this is approximately one weekend day per 6-8 weeks, at peak times this may be more frequent)
