About Us

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) the UK’s independent aviation regulator. It is our responsibility to ensure fair and equitable industrial practice as well as safeguard the public.

We have recently taken on responsibility for regulating space activities, this includes everything from launches to satellite constellations. To help us tackle this exciting challenge, we’re looking to add to our established team of experienced professionals.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a new division that will own the technical regulatory oversight of future UK space activities.

The Role

As a Orbital Safety Analyst you will play a pivotal part in the Space Analysis Team. You will work alongside two other Space Safety Analysts as well as the Space Analysis Lead. The team collaborates internally with the Space Engineering, Policy and Licensing teams as well as Policy Specialists from across government.

A core part of your role will be to add to the development of risk analysis tools. These tools are vital in enabling us to accurately evaluate and license future space activities. As well as this, they help to assess applications from prospective spaceflight operators. For example, the tools may characterise the influence of satellite failure rates on the safety of a constellation or estimate the risk of collision of satellites in congested orbits.

You’ll also help us build up a library of technical evidence that will be used to support future policy decision making on a variety of topics. These topics include subjects like space safety and sustainability and your work in these areas will go on to be shared with international bodies, such as the Inter-Agency Space Debris Coordination Committee (IADC). Furthermore, your contributions here will open the door to in depth collaboration with our counterparts from across the globe, as well as multilateral forums such as UN COPUOS.

About You

You should have previous experience developing software tools and analysing complex problems, ideally in the orbital environment. We want to form a team with a breadth of experience across a wide variety of subject areas. This is done to encourage diversity of thought and ensure that we are better able to assess the broad range of spaceflight license applications that are expected.
