We are the UK’s aviation regulator and recognised as a world leader in its field. Our activities are diverse, enabling the aviation industry to meet the highest safety standards, and we pride ourselves on our ability to adapt to the constantly evolving aviation environment.

The Role

The State Safety Partnerships (SSP) team is funded by the Department for Transport (DfT) to work with stakeholders to improve aviation safety for UK operators overseas and for overseas operators in UK airspace. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a team that has the real ability to make a difference and everything we do has an impact on aviation safety. This unique role does not come up very often and is fully funded by the DfT as part of their Global Safety Initiative.

As a State Safety Partnerships Specialist it will be your role to support the Head of SSP and act as the key technical subject matter specialist regarding aviation safety performance. To this end, your responsibility will be to identify key aviation safety risks as well as raise, debate and influence their conclusion with the relevant parties. Functionally this means that you’ll work closely with a wide array of foreign nation states, domestic and international government departments, industry operators as well as aviation authorities and establishments.

The role requires a strong communicator with experience of collaborating with international partners. This is because you will often be required to broach potentially sensitive issues or topics with wide ranging impacts and connotations. Additionally, you will have to think laterally to develop novel solutions to these often nuanced and sophisticated challenges. These issues will require you to enter each scenario with an open mind and a constructive approach that both respects the sovereignty of your partners while driving for, and influencing, results.

Some of the issues you will be tackling might have simple solutions, others might need more extensive discussion and debates to achieve any progress. To be successful you must be truly passionate about aviation safety, possess a high degree of cultural sensitivity and awareness and undeniable aviation knowledge and expertise.

About You

  • An experienced civil aviation safety regulator or aviation safety analytics specialist with a detailed understanding of the international aviation regulatory environment and substantial experience of, and involvement in, multi-disciplinary projects
  • Well-developed communication skills, preferably gained in and applicable to a multi-cultural environment, combined with commercial judgement and a broad appreciation of the international aviation community (cultural, political, environmental, technical)
  • being able to address varied audiences in international environments
  • Stakeholder management at all levels (especially Director level)
  • Experience in developing and delivering company strategies and plans. Creativity to build original technical solutions beyond the framework and concepts of today, especially for those States who are behind on technology etc.

What Can We Offer You?

If you are the kind of person who thrives on collaboration and who takes pride in their ability to influence decision making, then this is a superb platform to improve safety on an international level. This is a role for someone who is dedicated to raising global aviation safety standards and who revels in the idea of truly contributing to global best practice.
