Job Summary

Applications are invited for a Locum Consultant Breast Oncoplastic Surgeon to work at the Sutton site of The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust

The Breast Unit is the largest clinical unit at The Royal Marsden, delivering the full range of diagnostic and treatment services at the Chelsea and Sutton sites and an oncology service at Kingston Hospital. Referrals are received to the unit in a variety of ways including directly from GPs through our Rapid Diagnostic and Assessment Centres (RDAC), from local screening services and from other centres and hospitals requesting second opinions and transfers of care. The Breast Unit aims to deliver the latest high-quality treatment for all stages of breast cancer, and to be at the forefront of international research into the development of new treatments. Although the Breast Unit works across both sites largely independently, it does so according to a standardised operational policy and agreed clinical guidelines.

This is a full time (10PA) fixed term 12-month post based at the Sutton site of the Royal Marsden from April 2024. The ideal candidate will be an exceptional surgeon and clinical leader with a background in developing clinical research. This role will be suitable for a surgeon who is adept at balancing competing demands and is comfortable with being flexible and responsive to help meet both the service and research needs of the department.

Main duties of the job

  • Providing a comprehensive service for patients with breast cancer and benign breast conditions.
  • Participating in the weekly multidisciplinary meeting and supporting the multidisciplinary care team which includes Surgeons, Clinical and Medical Oncologists, Radiologists, Fellows and deanery trainees, Specialist Nursing Staff, Pathologists, Radiographers, Palliative Care and Psychological Support.

  • Working closely with the clinical genetics service in the context of the existing risk-reducing and family history practice.
  • Carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contribute to post graduate and continuing medical education activities locally, nationally and internationally.
  • Participating in existing research and service development projects within the Trust and Unit; support can be provided to develop and lead research projects. The appointee will be expected to use the timetabled flexible session (Monday AM) to develop a special interest related to clinical care
  • Working closely with Consultant colleagues in other oncology services within RM Partners and participate in the relevant pathway group
