Candidates must be dental/medical qualified and registered GDC and /or GMC. Must have completed DF1 training or equivalent in posts approved by the surgical Royal Colleges (F1/F2 for medics).

Main duties of the job

This post is to provide the night time first on call cover for maxillofacial surgery. The appointee will be part of an on call rota delivering first on call service. They will be supported by senior colleagues. It is ideal for those pursuing a second degree towards a career in Oral & Maxillofacial surgery.

Working for our organisation

The Department has 5 operating surgeries/consulting rooms, 2 consulting rooms, 1 counselling room, 1 recovery area and a spacious waiting room. It also contains a self-contained General Anaesthetic suite. This suite has a waiting room, anaesthetic room, operating theatre, recovery area and relatives’ room. Maxillofacial office facilities are extensive, including separate offices for SHO’s, Registrars and SAS Grades with computer facilities in all rooms for communications, teaching and research purposes. There is a department seminar room and a kitchen/common room.

Next to the Maxillofacial Unit is a large Maxillofacial Laboratory with 5 technicians, who have special interests in implant retained facial prosthetics & obturators, sleep apnoea devices, etc. Adjacent to this is the Orthodontic & Restorative Department with offices for the Consultants, Registrar and staff grades, model planning room and 6 treatment surgeries. We also have a dedicated Maxillofacial X-ray Unit close to the main department.

The department undertakes the full range of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery including head & neck cancer, craniofacial deformity, cleft, TMJ surgery, oral medicine, implantology and a significant amount of trauma. Several multidisciplinary clinics are held and teamworking with the Orthodontists, Restorative Consultant and Lab technicians is encouraged for a patient-centred approach to treatment.


Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The main duty of this post will be to deliver the night time first on call service for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery under the direct or indirect supervision of the StRs and consultants. The appointee will participate in a rota which delivers this service. They will cover both in patient and Emergency services.

The post holder would be expected to work flexibly according to the demands of the service. and occasionally perform duties in unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultant, in consultation wherever practicable with other colleagues.

Training and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BDS or MBBS or equivalent qualification registerable with either GDC or GMC
  • Completion of either Dental Foundation Training or Medical Foundation Training or evidence of equivalent competencies
Desirable criteria
  • Full registration with GDC or GMC

Exper

Essential criteria
    • 3-4 yrs dental work since primary qualification (acceptable for registration by GDC or equivalent)
    • Competence in independent dentoalveolar surgery
Desirable criteria
    • 2 years’ experience in surgical practice, OMFS training post/surgical training post/emergency dental service post
    • 2-3 years SHO training in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery or Oral Surgery
    • Evidence of On-call experience

Salary: The quoted salary will be on a pro rata basis for part time workers.

  • Disclosure and Barring Service: Your post maybe subject to a DBS check which incur a cost dependent on the level of check required (£45 for enhanced and £28 for standard). I agree to reimburse Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust the cost of a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check if it is required (by deduction from first month’s pay). Should I decide to withdraw from my job offer, I agree to reimburse Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust the cost of the DBS check undertaken by cheque or other agreed method.
