RINA is currently recruiting for a Lightning Protection Consultant to join its office in Pontyclun within the Green Energy Solutions Division

Role Overview

The Lightning Protection Consultant works within the Power / Earthing & Lightning Protection Unit and reports to the Head of Earthing & Lightning Protection. The purpose of the role is to support the E&LP team in servicing their client base, providing solutions to lightning protection projects across diverse sectors. The role will be based at the Pontyclun office and will involve frequent travel to client substation locations throughout the UK.

Job Responsibilities

Risk Assessment, Design and Simulation

  • Lightning Protection risk assessment of structures and buildings to BSEN 62305 and other international standards.
  • Design of lightning protection systems for new projects, to BSEN 62305 and other international standards.
  • CDEGS computer simulation of lightning protection systems for design assessments.

Site Visits

  • Site based electrical testing and inspection of lightning protection systems at oil/gas facilities, industrial sites, substations, power stations, renewable energy projects, etc.
  • Analysis of data gathered on site.

Customer/Client Relations:

  • Dealing with RINA clients to request technical input data, communicate outputs and resolve queries.

Report Writing:

  • Preparation of reports to required quality standards.

Qualifications Required:

Essential:

  • Electrical Engineering degree – Bachelor level / a relevant vocational qualification plus experience

Desirable

  • Electrical Engineering degree – Masters level

Skills & Experience:

Essential:

  • Minimum of 3 years’ relevant experience of carrying out lightning protection risk assessments and design
  • Able and willing to attend client sites at various locations around the UK to perform physically demanding earth testing work
  • Willing to stay away from home for short periods, e.g., 2 to 4 nights per week, while carrying out site testing
  • Good working knowledge of CDEGS and AutoCAD software
  • Proficient in MS Office applications

Desirable

  • Working knowledge of LP risk assessment software such as Furse StrikeRisk and Dehn Support Toolbox
  • Relevant experience of carrying out lightning protection system visual inspections and electrical measurements in accordance with British Standards
