Job Introduction

We are recruiting a Head of Audience Research for Content, working on a jobshare basis (3 days a week/21 hours). This is a permanent role, based in London.

This is a position at the heart of the BBC creative and commissioning team and you will be working with the current Head of Research to optimise and develop the research discipline within the Audiences Content team.

Main Responsibilities

As Head of Audience Research, you will ensure that decisions at all levels of seniority across commissioning and the portfolio are informed by relevant, accurate, creatively-enabling data and insight. Working with your jobshare partner, you will provide collaborative leadership, with success dependent on strong working partnerships, effective communication and the sharing of relevant data, insight and practical guidance across Audiences and the BBC.

In particular:

  • You will be a leading voice of the audience in the Content division by providing high quality advice and audience insight to the most senior stakeholders across the Content portfolio–actively communicating insights generated by the audiences team in actionable and inspirational way.
  • You will lead the wider team, ensuring that we use insights to drive impact for Content.
  • You will be required to develop the team’s skills and insights to ensure maximum cross platform insight is being communicated to all stakeholders (and as part of this to develop an enhanced working relationship with data and planning teams)
  • You will direct big, strategic pan-BBC research projects and will tell audience stories from multiple sources, bringing together insights from behavioural data, personal data, ad hoc studies and industry sources.
Are you the right candidate?

To be successful in this role you will need:

  • In depth knowledge of market and audience research techniques gained through significant experience of market research and a sound understanding of both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, with an ability to devise new ways of better exploiting research data will be required.
  • A thorough understanding of BARB data is a necessity and it would be useful to have an understanding of wider data sources - including other video related data sources e.g Tubular Labs. You will have a thorough understanding of the broadcast, pay TV and subscription on demand industry.
  • A proven record of developing & using audience/consumer insights and communicating them to senior stakeholders, creative and non-marketing literate communities, in a relevant, impactful and engaging way.
  • Experience of managing stakeholder relationships at a senior level and a proven record of managing and developing senior researchers is essential for this role.
  • A firm understanding of, and innovative approach to, cross platform research and audience behaviour across media. This person will be expected to work collaboratively across the BBC and will help to shape the future direction of the team and its priorities.
  • Experience of running large, complex research projects independently and proactively, able to think proactively of ways to analyse and get the most out of our existing data sources. In addition, be able to draw together insights from multiple sources to tell a bigger audience story.
  • Experience of handling both big strategic questions and small tactical queries. In addition to solid research skills, the post holder must have a proven track record in a Television or Video related industry.

It is critical for this role that the successful candidate is interested in the broad spectrum of BBC content and is happy to work collaborative through the matrix structure (within Audiences, with Marketing, across channels, genres and platforms).
