Job overview

We are seeking to appoint an innovative, experienced and dynamic Clinical Specialist Occupational Therapist for the Stroke Service across Queens Medical Centre and City Hospital campuses within Nottingham University Hospital NHS Trust.

This exciting role requires a committed and dedicated person to lead the strategic development of Occupational Therapy within stroke services in conjunction with the existing therapy Clinical Lead . The post holder will work in close partnership with the multidisciplinary leadership team within the wider stroke specialty.


Main duties of the job

The post holder will be a registered Occupational Therapist. They will be a strong clinical leader who demonstrates a high level of clinical expertise and who is highly visible and accessible to Therapy staff throughout the stroke service. They will drive and lead service improvements and support the wider team with teaching and training. They will work closely with the Therapy Services Manager and also with the Stroke Specialty Management Team to ensure services are developed in line with the Trust vision.

Our HCPC registered AHP professionals comprise of physiotherapists, dietitians, occupational therapists, orthotists, prosthetists and speech and language therapists. We have a Chief AHP to lead us on our strategic direction, and many of the pathway leadership team have pathway AHP backgrounds to support our staff. There are also Practice Development Therapists to support career development for all.

Analytical and Judgement skills

Essential criteria

  • Ability to analyse, interpret and compare information e.g. interpreting results of investigations.
  • Ability to assess, formulate a diagnosis and plan patient management, using highly specialist clinical reasoning skills and a wide range of treatment options.
  • Ability to assess and manage risk in relation to patient care and working environment.
  • Ability to critically appraise research literature and together with the team, implement evidence based practice in order to deliver an effective service.
  • Ability to evaluate own clinical interventions and that of the team
  • Provide critical evaluation of service delivery and facilitate necessary change.
  • Ability to allocate limited resources in accordance with changing needs.

Planning and organisation skills

Essential criteria

  • Ability to plan and prioritise own workload, by using planning, organisational and time management. This requires flexibility to work over a number of different settings.
  • Ability to delegate effectively.
  • To contribute to the overall service delivery with the multidisciplinary team in own work section/ department/ directorate.
  • To develop the therapy service in Stroke in relation to Trust objectives and National guidelines.

Physical Skills

Essential criteria

  • Evidence of highly developed advanced therapy skills ; High levels of co-ordination e.g. facilitation of movement.

Communication and relationship skills

Essential criteria

  • Able to communicate effectively establishing and maintaining relationships.
  • Able to utilise persuasion, negotiation and reassurance skills to ensure agreement and co-operation.
  • Ability to communicate and present highly complex information effectively, in written and verbal formats to individuals or groups.
  • Ability to motivate, train and teach own and other disciplines of staff.
  • Able to influence Senior medical consultants, GP’s and Commissioners.

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Require highly advanced / theoretical / practical knowledge and clinical reasoning skills for patients in the Stroke environment.
  • A broad range of advanced therapeutic skills.
  • Experience of working in NHS and community settings, throughout the stroke pathway
  • Experience of working with and providing leadership for a multi-disciplinary team.

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of involvement in profession at a regional or national level eg RCOT or national guideline committee.

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • BSc Hons in Occupational Therapy, or equivalent.
  • Recognised post-graduate training relevant to specialty preferably including research skills to a Master’s level.
  • Evidence of maintaining professional competence through CPD.
  • Knowledge of National, Trust and Departmental policies, procedures and guidelines.

Desirable criteria

  • Member of relevant specialist interest group
