JOB TITLE: Architecture Thermal Lead Engineer

SALARY: £48,000 - £52,000

POSTING END DATE: 18/11/2021

LOCATION: Gaydon

We’re re-examining our vehicles and what a vehicle means in the emerging world of automation, connectedness, electrification and the shared economy. New ideas, new technology, and new approaches to mobility are our business. Join a team of next generation thinkers.

What to Expect

The Thermal team is part of the Thermal & Aerodynamic Systems Engineering (TASE) group within Vehicle E ngineering . In conjunction with the TASE Attribute Team Leaders, the Thermal Team is responsible for delivery of the Thermal Attribute across all vehicle programmes and the development of associated toolsets. Thermal Attribute requirements primarily include the delivery of airflow for powertrain (internal combustion, hybrid and electric vehicle), driveline, battery and brake cooling, the management of the engine bay and under body thermal environment to ensure acceptable temperatures are maintained for all systems and components and the thermal energy management control strategy to ensure the thermal related systems are functioning in the most efficient way. Development and verification methods used within the Thermal Team include 3-D Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and heat management Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) tools, 1-D control systems analysis and whole vehicle-based testing in climatic facilities, on the track and in market.

The Role

You’ll work with several system areas within the functional domain for Thermal. Through the functional domain and in working with the Thermal & Aero technical team the thermal management strategy will need to be delivered on the architecture. The main focus will be on the vehicle level integration of Energy Management, Thermal management, aerodynamics, Powertrain and Climate control. This will range from developing strategies for Thermal management to taking a system engineering approach for thermal management solutions delivering overall thermal efficiency.

The Architecture Thermal Lead Engineer, within the TASE organisation, leads the attribute delivery on a single architecture with multiple Jaguar Land Rover programmes from project kick off through to Final Engineering Completion . The architecture leader will be motivated to pursue project and technical interaction with Vehicle engineering, commodity groups and functional teams and report-out issues and opportunities at every business level when required. The Architecture leader will be expected to deliver the thermal energy management control strategy and lead the resolution of technical issues through the Jaguar Land Rover vehicle engineering process.

Thermal design tools range from CAE to on-track assessment covering a large scope of thermal-related challenges. The role, therefore, is varied and allows the chosen candidate to demonstrate their technical and programme management skills and ability to resolve issues with a customer mind-set. The Architecture Thermal Lead Engineer feeds into the technical team which contribute to advancing the attribute development and sign-off through process change, facilities development and advance in test operations.

The successful candidate will, on a day-to-day basis, be expected to run Architecture Team meetings, present at all business levels and work closely with the TASE Functional, Test & Development , CAE and Vehicle Le a d Engineer teams to ensure effective internal processes. You will also be expected to manage communication externally with commodity groups , vehicle engineering and programme team. You will interrogate CFD and system simulations and results and develop presentations / communications to suit.

Specific responsibilities will include:
  •     Overall project management of the Thermal management attribute, integrating the relevant thermal system areas on a daily basis.
  •     Championing development and delivery of Thermal management requirements as agreed by programme teams
  •     Working with system and component areas to define, balance and maintain cascaded target requirements in support of overall vehicle level targets
  •     Identifying Thermal management-related programme targets and manage the development of optimal solutions
  •     Driving a system engineering approach for Thermal management solution development across the architecture.
  •     Presenting thermal management attribute status at various levels, both technical and program.
  •     Produce and input Design Verification Plans (DVPs) and communicate to the Vehicle Integration Team
  •     Planning and co-ordinating Thermal management analysis, drawing on support and resources from the Thermal technical teams, Subject Matter Experts and Technical Specialists
  •     Planning and supporting Thermal wind tunnel testing and interpreting test results, drawing on support and resources from the Thermal technical teams, Subject Matter Experts and Technical Specialist
  •     Defining test property requirements with team members and the programme teams to ensure delivery of the TASE DVPs
  •     Be the Primary contact for architecture issues
  •     Develop future landscapes for architectures
  •     Develop architecture strategies
  •     Participate in the Thermal Energy Management functional domain
  •     Engage relevant system areas to develop and deliver the Thermal control strategy

What you’ll need

You’ll need to be self-starting and motivated to deliver quality TASE solutions, and have a proven track record in Thermal Management, Energy Management, Electrification, Powertrain Cooling or Climate Control. Also, you’ll need strong project management skills, alongside demonstratable presentation skills. Ideally, you’ll have experience in both thermodynamics (or a related discipline), and testing in climatic, aerodynamic or acoustic wind tunnels. Lastly, you’ll ideally have experience conducting or interpreting CFD/CAE analyses, and it would be beneficial to have experience in developing control strategies.

SO WHY US?

Bring all this to the home of premium innovation, and you’ll find the opportunities to further your career with a world-class team, a discounted car purchase and lease scheme for you and your family, membership of a competitive pension plan and performance related bonus scheme. All this and more makes Jaguar Land Rover the perfect place to continue your journey.
