Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the AOS team in haematology. The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic team player with a passion for excellent patient care.

The AOS team work closely with their nursing and medical colleagues, and the wards within the CAS division. You will need to have substantial haematology knowledge, be able to work on your own, and possess excellent communication skills.


Main duties of the job

To provide specialist triage, assessment and care to patients with haematological malignancies who present acutely.

To work closely with clinicians and nurses throughout Clinical Haematology, in particular in Haematology day case and the Specialist Receiving Unit (SRU).

To review outlying patients, and be competent in making clinical decisions

To educate and train other members of staff in AOS throughout the Trust.

To undertake audits tracing the AOS pathway, and identify areas of improvement.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To act as one of the leads for AOS nursing care.

To facilitate communication and coordinated care between primary, secondary and tertiary care providers in relation to acute haematology

To establish clinical pathways between primary and secondary care.

To utilise specialist knowledge and skills and liaise with the multi-disciplinary teams already involved with the diagnosis and management of patients with haematological malignancies and cancer.

To provide specialist assessment, triage and care to patients with complex acute Haemato-oncology needs.

To offer compassionate, sensitive care where physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs are met.

To act as a clinical expert and professional resource for patients, carers and health care professionals.

To influence patient care through indirect roles of providing specialist education and training.

To develop and implement clinical guidelines, protocols and standards.

To undertake audits and service developments within the AOS.

To promote joint working and collaborative practices with colleagues, patients, carers, other health and social care professionals and statutory, voluntary and independent organisations - to ensure optimum patient management and the timely, smooth transition of patient care.

To provide professional specialist leadership and effective management of resources, ensuring high standards of nursing care are delivered to all patients requiring input from the AOS.

Training and qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Registered Nurse part 1, of the register
  • ENB 998 or equivalent Teaching & Assessing qualification.
  • Evidence of continued professional Development.
  • First level degree in nursing/healthcare studies
  • Willingness to undertake supplementary prescribing course.

Desirable criteria

  • History taking and clinical assessment course.
  • Supplementary Prescriber.
  • Advanced Communication Skills Training Course or willingness to undertake.

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Significant post-registration experience, at Band 6 or above, ideally within a Haematology/Oncology setting.
  • Demonstrable evidence of specialist knowledge
  • Leadership and management experience.
  • Experience of teaching patients and colleagues
  • Experience of multi-disciplinary working.
  • Demonstrates awareness of research and evidence based practice.
  • Experience of developing standards, guidelines and policies.

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of setting up and developing a new service.
  • Experience of audit/research.

Communication and relationship skills

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Able to present relevant clinical information to a multi-professional audience.

Salary: The quoted salary will be on a pro rata basis for part time workers.
