Job overview

We are looking for a dynamic and highly motivated physiotherapist for an exciting additional B7 role in our QMC surgical service. This covers surgical HDU and EPOC, vascular, colorectal, HPB and head/neck surgical wards, surgical triage and admission. Co-leading with the existing B7, this role will focus on vascular, colorectal and HPB services; cross-cover will be required. You will offer expert clinical advice to therapy and specialty teams, supporting junior staff with decision making for patients with complex needs, upskilling and service development. You will contribute to respiratory out of hours training and competency assessment.


Service developments in vascular and general surgery mean it is an exciting time for our physiotherapy service, with opportunity to influence pathways of care for patients with respiratory and rehabilitation needs. Surgical HDU is nested within the wider Critical Care service, with a strong focus on rehabilitation. While based at QMC, this post will bring opportunity work closely with colleagues at City Hospital to promote high-quality patient care across surgical pathways.


The successful candidate will have a broad range of advanced respiratory and rehab skills. Experience with early vascular surgery rehab is essential; experience with neurological rehab is also be beneficial. You will have skills in creating wide professional networks to influence service improvement, educating and training others, team leadership and management.

Main duties of the job

You will provide a highly specialist physiotherapy service across the surgical service, with particular focus on vascular and general surgery pathways, to promote high standards of physiotherapy input to patients, often with complex needs.

The band 7 Advanced Practitioner Physiotherapist is expected to work towards the 4 pillars of practice: research, leadership, clinical excellence and education. This may include promoting a supportive teaching environment, undertaking annual appraisals, managing health and wellbeing as well as contributing to the education and training of students, preceptees and therapy assistants.

Co-leadership of the team will include some line management and pastoral responsibility for staff working at Band 2-6.

We are a diverse team of AHPs and support staff, with over 700 staff working together to deliver high quality care. HCPC registered professionals include dietitians, occupational therapists, orthotists, physiotherapists, prosthetists and speech and language therapists, with interprofessional working encouraged. Learning is available through NUH’s in-house leadership programmes, plus external opportunities where appropriate.

This post will allow a physiotherapist with a keen interest in inpatient respiratory and surgical care to expand clinical and leadership skills in a busy and responsive service, focusing on promoting excellent patient care.

37.5h per week, permanent.

Team core hours are Monday to Friday, 8.30am – 4.30pm; flexible working will be considered.

Additional duties will include participation in on call and weekend working, approximately 1-2 per month depending on clinical need.
