Job overview

An exciting opportunity (due to retirement) has arisen for a full time band 7 Ward Manager on Morris Ward, a 20 bedded Cardiac Surgery unit.

Morris Ward provides a high standard of nursing care for pre and post-operative cardiac surgery patients and we are looking for someone dynamic and passionate about cardiac surgery to lead the team.

The successful candidate must be experienced in leading a team as well as excellent clinic knowledge and skills.

Main duties of the job

The post holder is required to work as a member of the Cardiac Surgery Services nursing team;

The post holder will need to have a good team building skills and be able to demonstrate how they motivate and lead.

Evidence of clear effective communication skills and experience of change management is essential. He/she will be required to work flexibly as a member of the Morris team to ensure standards are being maintained, evaluated and where necessary improved.

Working for our organisation

Cardiac Surgery speciality is the only surgical area within the Medicine division. We are comprised of 20 bedded Morris ward, 16 beds of which are monitored. Cardiac Intensive Care & HDU, total of 16 monitored beds. Cardiac theatres, 2 theatres. All whom reside in the Trent Cardiac Centre (TCC). In addition we have the Cardiac Rehab team who are based in Dundee House.

We work very closely with the Cardiology Speciality. Sharing TCC, Matron, Deputy Matron, SGM, expertise and ideas for further development and to shape the services we provide.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Ward Manager position is pinnacle in leading the nursing team on Morris ward, they must be a capable and visible leader. They must lead by example; nurturing, approachable in developing the team . Ensuring care provided is both evidence based and of the highest standard.

Training & qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Current level one NMC registration
  • 2 years band 6 experience
  • health related degree

Desirable criteria

  • Advanced Life Support Course
  • Masters level study

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Post registration experience to include management/leadership experience
  • Ability to manage the clinical area or ward efficiently and effectively
  • Supervision of non registered staff, pre registration and post basic students

Desirable criteria

  • Cardiac Surgery/Cardiology experience
  • Formal teaching of groups of staff
  • Budget management

Communication and relationship skills

Essential criteria

  • Demonstrate self awareness and understanding of personal accountability
  • Ability to support colleagues, patients and relatives/carers in distressing circumstances.
  • Team player who can initiate, delegate and complete projects

Desirable criteria

  • Demonstrate evidence of providing formal teaching sessions
