The Role

We are currently looking to employ a team of Transmission Operators to join our vibrant and enthusiastic broadcast operations team in our studios in Staffordshire. You will be a highly motivated team member who will bring energy and commitment to our department.

This is a multi-skilled position which encompasses a range of responsibilities and duties. These responsibilities will include post-production, gallery operations (editing, animation, lighting, vision and camera control, communications, circuit co-ordination, vision mixing, programme direction and sound mixing), studio operations (camera operations and floor management), and transmission control. It is also expected that the successful candidate will have the ability to independently plan, shoot and edit content for our social/community outlets.

As you progress within the position, you will assume an increasing number of these responsibilities. Full training and development opportunities will be provided to ensure that you are fully competent across the majority of duties. You will demonstrate a commitment to learn to operate new technology systems and being able to adapt to different working methods.

Key Responsibilities
  • Technical operations and creative collaboration for video production and postproduction including live and pre-recorded content.
  • Postproduction of video, graphics and audio using Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Setup, operation and maintenance of all studio equipment.
  • Operating cameras such as Sony FS7/Sony X-160 for single camera and directed multi-camera productions, including handheld operation.
  • Vision and audio line-up for multicamera productions.
  • Vision mixing, including building and operating macros and custom panels using Ross Carbonite and Dashboard.
  • Multi-camera studio directing
  • Design and operation of live studio graphics using Ross Xpression.
  • Setup and operation of studio lighting, including DMX control using ETC lighting desks.
  • Audio mixing and monitoring.
  • Studio communications using RTS Talkback.
  • Routing and patching video/audio feeds and operation of CAR/MCR equipment.
  • Teleprompter operations.
  • Organising and managing transmission schedules.
  • Setting and applying basic quality control checks.
  • Understanding and executing instructions within the studio environment.
Desirable Skills
  • Knowledge of Ross Video systems
  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (Premiere / After Effects / Audition)
Key Accountabilities
  • Proactively perform all preparation to ensure accurate, error-free transmission of all live programming
  • To ensure all output is transmitted in a high standard and complies with all technical regulations.
  • Accountable for health & safety of the operational area to which the Transmission Operator is allocated, ensuring safe systems of work are applied.
  • To research and understand technical information then share and translate to the team / stakeholders
  • Perform basic troubleshooting of problems or service interruptions for the live signals, including interfacing with vendors, management and other departments.
  • Proactively detect problems and errors in advance and take responsibility to resolve issues and to champion continuous improvements.

  • Ability and willingness to demonstrate confidence and take ownership of transmissions, including errors, faults and outages when they occur, and to communicate events to others in a timely, professional and accurate manner.
  • An individual who is determined and conscientious, enjoys diagnosing and solving problems and is committed to providing the best entertainment to our players.
Previous Experience
  • Degree level (or equivalent) in a relevant technical or broadcast discipline.
  • Experience working in Live Broadcast or Video production environments.
