We are advertising for a transferee/ re-joiner Police Sergeant to be located at Southampton.

The successful applicant will direct and co-ordinate a team of Constables toward local and force-wide goals whilst providing accessible supervision nearest to the point of service-delivery. You will manage and co-ordinate resources effectively, maintaining a liaison with higher-management to ensure that information is relayed and support is readily available.


Key Accountabilities:

  • Supervise a team, managing their wellbeing and welfare, development and ensuring high levels of motivation to enable an effective front line policing service.
  • Provide specialist advice and guidance to team members to ensure that responses are delivered within appropriate policies and legislation and achieve the best possible outcomes.
  • Monitor and manage the performance of the team, devising and implementing effective strategies to identify issues and improve team/individual performance to ensure adherence to professional standards and contribute to the achievement of unit/Force objectives
  • Support the assessment of individuals, assessing capabilities and development needs and devising appropriate development plans to enable high performance and potential progression.
  • Co-ordinate and control appropriate front line responses and investigations, allocating resources, directing activities, managing risks and reviewing progress to deliver an effective response which supports law enforcement and enables public safety.
  • Supervise and monitor the handling of information, intelligence and evidence and record keeping ensuring alignment with legislation, policies and guidance which enables effective law enforcement and the initiation of criminal justice proceedings.
  • Contribute to the identification of appropriate internal and external local partners in line with the Force’s planned approach, co-ordinating and monitoring the establishment of effective partnerships to enable progress against community policing objectives.
  • Support the review and reporting on team expenditure to ensure the efficient use of available budgets and maximise value for money.
  • Identify opportunities for and co-ordinate the exploration of new ways of working and innovation in policing, applying critical thinking to identify solutions to problems in line with evidence based practice within own area of responsibility.
  • Support the implementation of problem solving and evidence based policing initiatives by championing and applying relevant methodologies and approaches to area of work.

Initial Eligibility Criteria

BTP welcome applications from those who have previously served as a member of a Home Office police force.

In line with current College of Policing guidance on re-joiner applicants, there is no time restriction in place for those wishing to re-join service and we will consider all ex-officers on application.

A training needs analysis will be conducted as required and, depending on the length of time out of service or any notable skills gaps, training could be anywhere from 2 to 18 weeks and may include a period of Work-Based Assessment. Please be aware that training requirements cannot be assessed on a speculative basis and this will be discussed at conditional offer stage.

Essential Eligibility Criteria

Before the BTP progresses your application, consideration will be given to a number of initial eligibility criteria. Therefore, please consider the following before completing an application:

  • Applicants must currently be serving in a Home Office police force or have previously served in a Home Office police force.
  • Those applying on a transferee basis must currently be serving in a Home Office police force and be substantive in the rank of Sergeant, having completed the full probationary service.
  • Those applying to re-join service must have previously served as a member of a Home Office police force, having served substantively in the rank of Sergeant and resigned or retired from that force.
  • Applicants must not currently be subject to any unsatisfactory performance reviews, action plans or live warnings.
  • Rejoiner members returning at a rank that requires the National Police Promotion Framework (NPPF) legislative exam (sergeant or inspector) must sit the respective exam at the earliest opportunity. This applies to all rejoiner members who have not already successfully achieved a pass at the required level, or if the currency of such a pass has lapsed.
  • Rejoiner members returning to a role that requires the National Investigators’ Examination (NIE) (any detective role) must sit the exam at the earliest opportunity. This applies to all rejoiner members who have not already successfully achieved a pass at the required level, or if the currency of such a pass has lapsed.
  • Any other eligibility criteria listed within the role-specific Job Description

You will not be eligible to apply if you have an existing CCJ or IVA outstanding against you. Applicants who have been registered bankrupt will not be considered. Failure to disclose any of the above will lead to your application being rejected.
