ITV Cymru Wales - Trainee Camera Operator

Location: Cardiff

Permanent Role based in the Cardiff newsroom

We are looking for a highly motivated Trainee Camera Operator to join our team to help produce award winning news and programmes at ITV Cymru Wales.

Our Camera Operators provide first class camera and newsgathering skills, covering all aspects of our output both on screen and online. As a Trainee Camera Operator working in a live news environment, you will have a great deal of energy and a passion for story telling in news and for live TV production.

You would work alongside our multi-skilled team providing technical, craft and operational skills across the news and programmes service. You will need to be proactive and creative with a friendly and approachable manner and a willingness and aptitude to learn many new skills.

Above all, you will be an excellent communicator who is quick thinking and calm under pressure, able to digest and react to information efficiently. You’ll be a great representative of ITV in public.

The role offers the opportunity to develop your skills in all aspects of location newsgathering, both live and recorded. With training and guidance you will shoot, collate, edit and send high quality footage from location and studio and also learn how to operate the satellite newsgathering truck (SNG).

Flexibility is a key part of this role. Your rostered hours will include some evening and weekend working and you can expect to travel to locations across Wales on a daily basis. Because of the nature of news and programme production you will be required to work outdoors for long periods. There will be occasions when you are required to work long and unsociable hours at short notice.

A good level of physical fitness is required due to the weight of the equipment needed in this role. The successful candidate will be asked to undergo a pre-employment medical check to ensure their fitness to perform the job and to identify any pre-existing medical conditions that may be exacerbated by carrying a reasonably heavy camera and kit.

What do I need to get this role/job?

If you have a full driving licence, a passion for news storytelling and are looking to start your career or expand on your current skills and experience, this could be the perfect role for you.

Minimum criteria

  • You will have the means to travel to and from location transporting various camera kit
  • The ability to carry and set up camera equipment on location
  • Operational camera experience - within studies, work placement or other
