We are pleased to be offering an exciting opportunity for a Specialist Biomedical scientist to join our Immunology team based at the Queens Medical Centre Campus.

Our Immunology department provides a unique opportunity to experience a very large repertoire of Immunology investigations with a variety of techniques using some of the latest equipment. This includes Navios and Aquios flow cytometers, DS2 ELISA processors, 2 Bioflash chemiluminescent instruments, 2 Unicap 250s, Quantalyser 3000 IIF processor and Euroblotone blot processor.

Bringing with you substantial Immunology experience with sound scientific and technical knowledge of Immunological techniques you will be a highly motivated HCPC state registered BMS who holds an IBMS specialist diploma in Immunology.

Alongside using your detailed technical knowledge to provide high quality patient services you will also work closely with the senior team to ensuring the smooth running of the laboratory through management and training of staff and take an active role in ensuring our quality agenda is centre to all we do. You will also be required to trouble shoot equipment and assay failures and contribute to development of the service by participating in verification and change management projects.

The department is UKAS (ISO15189:12) accredited and CPD is actively encouraged and supported. There is also the possibility to study for the IBMS Higher specialist diploma.

Main duties of the job

As a Specialist Biomedical Scientist, the post holder’s main role is to carry out the examination of samples using various technologies which may be of a specialist nature and to report or present the results as appropriate. It expected that the post holder would have a considerable degree of autonomy and would be able to work unsupervised for significant periods.

The post holder will be expected to assist the section manager in the daily operation of the assigned section including the supervision more junior State Registered BMS and support staff.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Carry out all laboratory analyses associated with the post, including reporting results, maintaining appropriate records and documentation.
  • Undertake specialised analytical work in designated areas of the department.
  • Participate in the department’s rosters as required.
  • Undertake quality control procedures, examine quality control results to identify poor performance and instigate appropriate action.
  • Take delegated responsibility for the quality control, operation, routine maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment.
  • Ensure that personal work activity is managed to make effective use of time and maintain an adequate supply of laboratory consumables, reagents and equipment.
  • Ensure the competent and efficient use of computerised data management systems.
  • Take delegated responsibility for the supervision, training and coaching.
  • Maintain ongoing Professional Portfolio and update Professional Development Plan. Undertake courses and other activities to satisfy HCPC Continuing Professional Development requirements.
  • Assist with and, where appropriate, take responsibility for the development of new methods and the implementation of new technology.
  • Maintain standards of laboratory policies and procedures to ensure that the department meets National External Quality Assurance and Accreditation standards.
  • Assist with the production, maintenance and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Give appropriate advice to colleagues and or clinicians regarding the appropriateness of samples or assays.
  • Ensure that safe working practices are followed in accordance with departmental Safety Policy.
  • Be aware of and adhere to Trust policies, including those relating to discipline, grievance, sickness, absence and health and safety.
  • Ensure compliance with all statutory and legislative requirements including patient confidentiality and the Data Protection Act.
  • Work flexibly and undertake other duties commensurate with the grade as required.
  • Participate in Joint Annual Personal Development Review with line managers.

Person specification

Training and Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • State Registered BMS (HCPC); has completed the IBMS Specialist Portfolio or equivalent; knowledge of specialist discipline to postgraduate diploma level or equivalent acquired via short courses and ongoing specialist training. Demonstrates a commitment to continuing education and training.

Experience

Essential criteria

  • A minimum of 12 months UK based laboratory experience

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of 3+ years in Immunology lab

Analytical and Judgement skills

Essential criteria

  • Evidence of dealing with complex lab situations including QC/ EQA assessment

Salary: The quoted salary will be on a pro rata basis for part time workers.
