Role Purpose
The Vodafone Business Platforms & Solutions organisation is primarily focused on designing and delivering high quality products and customer solutions.
Within this organisation the Solution Train Engineer (STE) is responsible for facilitating and guiding the work of the Solution Train and all ARTs, delivery teams and Suppliers in the Value Stream.
A Scaled Agile STE will typically fulfil the following responsibilities:
- Manage and optimize the flow of value through the ART and Solution Train using various tools, such as the Program and Solution Kanbans and other information radiators
- Establish and communicate the annual calendars for Iterations and Solution Increments (SIs)
- Facilitate SI Planning readiness by fostering a Continuous Exploration process which drives the synthesis of a Vision, a Roadmap, and Backlogs, and through Pre- and Post-SI Planning meetings
- Facilitate the SI planning event
- Summarize program SI objectives into Solution SI Objectives and publish them for visibility and transparency
- Assist tracking the execution of features and capabilities (see Metrics)
- Facilitate periodic synchronization meetings, including value stream sync for Solution Trains
- Assist with economic decision-making by facilitating feature and capability estimation by teams and the roll-up to Epics, where necessary
- Coach leaders, teams, and Scrum Masters in Lean-Agile practices and mind-sets
- Help manage risks and dependencies
- Escalate and track impediments
- Provide input on resourcing to address critical bottlenecks
- Encourage collaboration between teams and System and Solution Architects/Engineering
- Work with Product and Solution Management, Product Owners, and other stakeholders to help ensure strategy and execution alignment
- Improve the flow of value through value streams by improving and assessing the DevOps and Release on Demand competency
- Help drive the Lean User Experience (UX) innovation cycle
- Work with Lean Portfolio Management on program execution and operational excellence
- Understand and operate within Lean Budgets and ensure adherence to Guardrails
- Facilitate Solution Demos
- Drive relentless improvement via Inspect and Adapt workshops; assess the agility level of the Solution Train and help them improve
- Foster Communities of Practice and the use of engineering and Built-In Quality practices
As the Solution Train Engineer, you are also responsible for:
- Support creation of the Lean Business Case (ELJ) including coordination and accountability for the quick impact assessment, risk profile and project plan
- Accountable for organising and running kick off, solution shaping sessions and feature analysis sessions as per the cadence model
- Accountable for creation and circulation of agreed key deliverables with key stakeholders for both the Quick Impact Assessment and Solution Intent
- Participates in Lean Portfolio Governance, representing the solution train providing view of available capacity in the team to receive additional EPICs from the EPIC backlog
- Accepts prioritised EPICs off EPIC backlog and coordinates development of the EPIC solution and generation of the initial capability/feature backlog (MVP)
- Accountable for the end to end delivery of all EPICs assigned into the solution train – covering budget management, technology and business deliverables
- Accountable for the dissemination of features into Release Trains via the RTE
- Monitor/control all features/enablers assigned to EPICs and reporting into the Programme Leadership Team inc. ensuring strict adherence to necessary tool usage
- Accountable for ensuring all agile ceremonies (stand-up’s, retrospectives etc..) are strictly adhered to by the Solution Train Team
- Key advocate and change agent for driving the agile ways of working ethos
- Strong experience working within a SAFe/agile environment, preferably as a STE or Agile Program Manager
- Experience facilitating large planning events (SI) by fostering a Continuous Exploration process which drives the synthesis of a Vision, a Roadmap, Backlogs
- Experience of coaching leaders, teams and Scrum Masters in Lean-Agile practices and mind-sets
- Strong experience in agile project management including bi-model environments
- Certified SAFe or other industry recognised agile certifications
- Experience working in an agile team
