We are recruiting for an opportunity to join the biological mass spectrometry (MS) capability within the Oncology Bioscience group in Cambridge. As a mass spectrometry Senior Research Scientist, you will be accountable for delivering robust and high quality proteomics data supporting drug discovery projects across the Oncology portfolio.

Working collaboratively with other disciplines across AstraZeneca, you will have the opportunity to really drive projects forward by implementing innovative solutions to address challenging biological questions. You should have a background in mass spectrometry and must have a strong passion for delivering data from the laboratory. You will use your strong scientific judgement, ability to analyse data, laboratory experience and communication skills to provide key contributions to experimental design and interpretation for drug discovery programmes.

What you’ll do

  • Develop, validate and implement MS-based proteomic approaches for application to drug discovery projects.

  • Operate state-of-the-art LC-MS instrumentation and ensure high-quality data generation.

  • Provide interpretation of the data, presenting key findings in a clear and concise manner while demonstrating a good understanding of its implications within the overall context of drug discovery.

  • Maintain an awareness of current developments in the field and bringing forward new initiatives to improve the capability.

  • Actively drive personal development with the group and independently identifying relevant opportunities.

Essential for the role

  • PhD in proteomics, mass spectrometry, analytical biochemistry or a related field. Alternatively a B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree with relevant industrial laboratory experience.

  • Strong theoretical understanding and practical knowledge of proteomic workflows.

  • Experience with high-resolution mass spectrometry platforms including designing, optimising, and analysing reaction monitoring (PRM/MRM) based assays.

  • Solid understanding of separation chemistry for peptide analysis with an experience of nano-flow UPLC.

  • Evidence of a strong scientific track record and ability to lead from the bench in problem solving and the development of innovative solutions.

  • Strong communication and presentation skills including the ability to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.

Desirable for the role

  • A knowledge of cancer biology.

  • An understanding of the drug discovery process
