Overview / ResponsibilitiesWe are committed to providing the best possible project delivery to our clients across the Life Sciences sector, ensuring that they have well engineered plants capable of performing world leading production and research for the Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology industries.Wood is recruiting for a Senior Project Engineer to support delivery of engineering capital projects based at our client site in Barnard Castle, County Durham.This is a site-based, permanent staff position and the expectation is for you to attend site at least 4 days a week with 1 day working from home days per week. Once you are established in the role, this can then be reviewed.Barnard Castle is a key site for the client with a large number of new products coming through development. They manufacture and supply a huge range of different pharmaceuticals and have recently opened a new state of the art aseptic digital facility producing biopharmaceuticals.The RoleOur Senior Project Engineers work closely with the client to deliver capital projects from concept through to completion. This role works closely with a multi-disciplined engineering team consisting of both Wood and client engineers alongside external designers, equipment vendors, and skilled contractors. Job Duties/ResponsibilitiesThe responsibilities for this role can vary considerably depending on scope and size of project. Below is a list of the core responsibilities for this role for which prior experience is essential.



  • Application of client health and safety standards within the working environment and in the design process
  • Ability to maintain safe working practices through all stages of a project with a focus on the assessment and mitigation of safety issues through design
  • Working in/leading multi-discipline teams delivering work packages in accordance with the requirements of quality and environmental management systems qualified to ISO standards
  • Application of pressure systems and ability to assist client when required
  • Be able to manage work scope and interfaces between all engineering disciplines to ensure the successful delivery of assigned work packages
  • Ability to review vendor documents and identify any problem areas
  • Evidence of experience of management of change
  • Active management of plant changes in a controlled and safe way
  • Understanding of what GMP, GDP and ALCOA are
  • Monitoring and reviewing engineering progress with Project Services and Engineering disciplines
  • Ability to be a focal point for discipline leads for multi –discipline issues that require expediting or resolution
  • Experience organising, attending, and preparing reports for safety reviews and other multidiscipline meetings

  • Degree in a relevant Engineering discipline (Process/Mechanical Engineering)
Desirable experience for this role:



  • Experience in chemical engineering design/operation of black utility systems e.g. plant steam, effluent drainage etc.
  • Desirable but not essential is experience of chairing safety reviews.
  • Integration of design schedule to procurement and/or fabrication schedules
  • Preparing and checking scope of work specifications, project procedures and project reports
  • Ability to take on tasks delegated by Project Manager or Engineering Manager
  • Reviewing engineering budgets and performance and initiating control measures including adjustments to manning levels
  • Representing engineering at Procurement status meetings
  • Assisting with responses to site queries from the ‘business as usual’ team
  • Able to fulfil role of Engineering Coordinator on small to medium size project
  • Demonstrable experience of delivery through full project and validation life cycle; URS, DQ, IQ, OQ, PQ and handover to production.
  • Leading multi-discipline teams.
