Summary

Senior Let Estate Building Surveyor for Wiltshire and Dorset


We have one of the largest and most diverse rural let estates in the UK and this role is based in the middle of an amazing portfolio of assets extending from the Purbeck Coast in Dorset to the famous village of Lacock in Wiltshire. We are looking for someone who can provide delivery, management and facilitation of all aspects of professional Building Surveying in Let Estate, including conservation, maintenance and compliance.


The successful management of the Let Estate assets will rely on significant input from the Senior Building Surveyor to help us deliver our core conservation and estate management objectives.

As the Senior Let Estate Building Surveyor for Dorset and Wiltshire you will be the technical lead and line manager for three Building Supervisors, each of whom cover a group of National Trust properties in the two counties, we also have a small direct labour team of skilled craftsmen at our workshops at Kingston Lacy and Lacock.


You will be based with colleagues at the Tisbury Hub, flexible working is entirely acceptable when appropriate (regardless of the pandemic). You will be working on the Let Estate across both counties from Avebury to Brownsea Island, monitoring and quality assuring the work undertaken by our excellent new Tenant Repair and Compliance Service as well as providing expert advice and support to a new and dynamic Let Estates team.

What you’ll be doing

As a senior leader and functional lead in the new team, you will have responsibility for a £1.2m plus expenditure budget including the delivery of planned and reactive maintenance tasks and refurbishment projects on a range of heritage and modern buildings on Estates owned by the National Trust including Stourhead, Lacock and Kingston Lacy.


You’ll create strong partnerships with colleagues and clients, steer your teams development and work with your in hand colleagues to raise the Trust’s professional building skills profile with existing and new audiences.


With a solid understanding of the built assets in your portfolio you will contribute to the Let Estate Key Performance Indicators. You will plan and deliver a programme of short and long term cyclical buildings work and improvements. At times you may also act as project manager, lead consultant or commercial client on small to medium projects.


You will be responsive to ensure a high-quality, successful delivery service is maintained. Whether the work is carried out internally or outsourced you will provide clear briefs and monitor works closely, with a close eye on risk management and mitigation.

Who we’re looking for

We’d like you to bring the following skills and experience to the role:


  • You will be a full member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, or have a similar relevant qualification
  • High level knowledge of building conservation, maintenance and repair.
  • Excellent people and influencing skills, able to build strong relationships externally and internally and experience of working with external agencies, contractors and organisations.
  • Successful track record of managing medium sized projects.
  • Successful track record in managing significant delegated budgets on behalf of operational senior managers.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant legislative requirements relating to the role.
  • Strong experience of contract management and contract administration in a supervisory capacity.
