This role is accountable for delivery of the Category Strategy by building a Customer Proposition to surprise, delight and exceed customers’ expectations, working alongside the specialists in Merchandising, Global Design, Global Sourcing, Customer Insights and Commercial Strategy.

You will do this by demonstrating the ability to flex your focus from short term commercial to longer term strategic planning when it is appropriate to do so.


As a Senior Buyer You’ll

  • Review customer, market and competitor analysis to make category level decisions and build the category strategy, proposition and plan.
  • Develop and deliver the range proposition partnering with Merchandising, Global Design, Technical and Global Sourcing to differentiate us vs. the Market
  • Partner with Commercial Insights and Commercial Strategy team to build data-led decisions from actionable insights.
  • Input into development of channel strategy at category level, working with Digital.
  • Work closely with Global Design and Technical to agree product proposition, product requirements, target price & margin framework and quality architecture.
  • Liaise with Product & Fabric Technologists to set quality criteria for own label products alongside Global Design.
  • Be responsible for identifying gaps in range. Review samples, build range and master assortment (value, quality, price) and present to Buying Manager for sign off.
  • Partner with Visual Comms team to ensure instore execution meets category strategy expectations & Digital team to optimise online channel execution.
  • Motivate, inspire, coach and develop a diverse high performing team that embraces change in the face of ambiguity and role models Sainsbury’s values whilst delivering against commercial metrics.
  • Alongside Merchandising, agree category promotional and events annual plan to maximise customer and commercial metrics.


Our Buying Team Would Love To See

  • Experience working in the Clothing, Jewellery & Watches markets.
  • Broad understanding of the UK retail market, constantly open to seeking new opportunities that create competitive advantage.
  • Strong financial and commercial awareness built in a trading retail environment.
  • Ability to gain commitment from other functions in the business that enable you to execute your strategic plan, role modelling positive and agile ways of working.
  • A strategic thinker, who puts the customer at the heart of decision-making, striking the balance between driving business metrics & longer-term objectives, based on optimising the balance of data, multiple perspectives and own intuition.
