About Us

The job is within the Benefits Section. The team process all types of claims for Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction, in accordance with all administrative and legislation requirements. We also process applications for Free School Meals and Pupil Development Grants.

About The Role

Pay Details: Grade 6, SCP 14-19 £25,409 - £27,852

Hours of Work / Working Pattern: 37 hours per week

Main Place of Work: Working from home/Civic Offices
  • Process all types of claims for Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction including self-employed earners, persons from abroad and students for all tenure types.
  • Deal with changes in circumstances for all types of claims and other items which require action in relation to benefit claims;
  • Deal with more complex correspondence and enquiries as assigned by management;
  • Ensure overpayments are correctly classified for recovery purposes and that action is taken to recover from ongoing benefit where appropriate;
  • Make decisions on requests for backdating benefit;
  • Keep up to date with current Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction Regulations and best practice;
  • Deal with customers enquiries by telephone, correspondence, or in person and conducting interviews;
  • Identify and report possible fraudulent claims to the Single Fraud Investigation Team;
  • Achieve individual performance targets established by management;
  • Liaise with other Council Departments, other agencies and other persons affected to ensure our customers receive correct information and advice about their benefit entitlement and that a customer focused service is provided;
  • Carry out accuracy checking of assessments and overpayments;
  • Make decisions on appeals;
  • Assist with the preparation and development of procedures;
  • Assist with the preparation of control reports and monitoring of controls:
  • Assist managers in staff development

About You
  • Experience in Benefits, Council Tax or a claimant/customer service environment within the last 3 years.
  • Use of IT systems.
  • Demonstrable experience of working within Benefits/Council Tax regulations/procedure
  • Experience of the Benefits Appeals process and Benefit Control
  • Knowledge of means tested benefits or customer service
  • Detailed knowledge the housing benefit system and Council Tax Reduction
  • Detailed knowledge of the Benefits Appeals process and Benefit Controls
  • Good interpersonal skills,
  • Numerate Analytical and Inquisitive,
  • Able to be discreet and maintain confidences.
  • Able to deal with customers in difficult situations.
  • Well developed IT skills
  • 5 GCSEs (Grade A to C) or equivalent including English and Mathematics.
  • Able to work as part of a team.
  • Able to work on own initiative
  • Able to deal confidently and effectively with customers.
