We are looking for a Senior Advisor to join the exciting work of the Digital Strategy team. We are a small, but growing team with big impact where you will be able to make a real difference.

This new role will focus on the people element of digital transformation for the organisation. Specifically, the role will be responsible for:

  • Developing a corporate view of our digital workforce, skills and future needs and requirements.
  • Leading digital related capability and skills framework development for the EA
  • Understanding needs and driving improvements in digital literacy
  • Point of contact for advice/signposting on the potential impact and considerations of new technologies on the general workforce,
  • Contributing to the development and delivery of Defra and EA’s Digital Strategies, and
  • Line management of two people who will support this work.
The role requires a strategic thinker, who can lead a team and who excels in building relationships with partners and stakeholders. The role may particularly suit someone from an HR background and/or who has experience of digital and data workforce and skills planning.

Responding to incidents is an important part of what we do, and with this in mind you’ll have an incident role and should be ready to make yourself available to respond or provide business continuity support. This may attract an additional payment, and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you.

The team

The Digital Strategy team sits in Strategy, Transformation and Assurance. Working across the EA and with our Digital, Data and Technology Corporate Services partner (DDTS) and the wider Defra Group in three broad areas:

1 - Digital strategy development and the EA’s strategic approach to digitally-enabled business transformation,

2 – Ensuring our workforce has the people and skills it needs for a digital future.

3 – Enabling and supporting corporate level IT change with DDTS.

Experience/skills Required

We are looking for an experienced Grade 6 who has:

  • experience working at a strategic level, is able to understand and contribute to the big picture and is comfortable working with senior stakeholders
  • line management experience, who can develop and lead a small team
  • good organisational skills and the ability to handle multiple priorities and deliver to tight timescales
  • good communication and influencing skills and can work effectively with others to understand their role in a sometimes complex delivery landscape
  • Experience in planning, collecting, managing and using data.
Highly desirable skills/experience:

  • Understanding and experience of the needs of digital service delivery / transformation
  • An HR background
  • Understanding the business of the Environment Agency

We’re a national team, giving you the flexibility to work from any office location. We offer flexible working hours, ideally covering the core hours of 10:00-15:00, but this can be negotiated.

For external appointees there will be an expectation to work at least one day a week from an office to support integration into the organisation, which is subject to regular review.

Occasional travel for meetings, away days etc including occasional overnight stays is required. On average once a month but may change subject to team needs.
