The Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) is a part of the Ministry of Defence responsible for the procurement, in-service support, and disposal of the UK’s nuclear submarines. Job Description

The SDA has two requirements for systems engineers to join their team. In these roles, you will be using your engineering background to engage with stakeholders and advise them on your area of expertise. You will use your coordination and specialist skills to fully support the maritime domain. The two roles are based within the Combat Systems Delivery Team (CSDT) and the Submergible Ship Nuclear AUKUS (SSNA) Project team.

As a Systems Engineer and SDA representative within the CSDT, you’ll have the opportunity to lead on the development of the Combat System Architecture. Developing the functional decomposition of the Submarine Combat System, you will operate at senior level as an authority on combat systems requirements and the link to the delivery of capability. You will engage with delivery projects across wider SDA teams and stakeholders across the combat system enterprise to provide specialist insight, ensuring robust and coherent systems engineering approaches are developed.

The Combat System Engineering area within the SSNA Project Team is responsible for providing direction, oversight, and control of the SSNA Combat System design. You will be responsible for the management of the functional and physical design of the combat system. Reporting to the Engineering System Owner you will be responsible for the design and integration of component sub-systems, being delivered by suppliers into the overall SSNA whole boat design. You will liaise with engineers and programme managers within the SSNA Project Team, industry partners as well as a wide range of other Ministry of Defence (MoD) stakeholders. The role will involve working at contractor sites, other MoD establishments and on occasion, with foreign partner nations.

  • Manage the delivery of all engineering aspects in area of responsibility as defined in the assignment specification or objectives including managing the acquisition safety aspects
  • Provide expert advice and guidance in own technical area to solve complex technical problems and identify application risks
  • Manage the technical requirements for the acquisition lifecycle stage of one or more project, programme, service or system
  • Monitor and implement any governance and assurance policies and procedures to ensure the ‘safe & professional’ status of the area led
  • Lead on the development of requirements related to own area of specialism including acceptance plans, performance criteria and draft specification
  • Interface with industry as the intelligent customer both in a scrutiny role and supporting the identification of application risks

You will be inducted into a hybrid role where you will be required to attend site for some of your working week. Some of these roles may require occasional travel to other UK sites.

Person specification

To be successful with your application, you’ll need to show that you meet the following essential criteria:

  • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer or has demonstrated equivalent knowledge, skills and experience
  • Relevant Level 4 (or higher) qualification or equivalent experience
  • Experience of providing technical advice and leading the delivery of successful engineering outcomes.
  • Wide ranging depth and breadth of technical experience in own specialism with knowledge and application of Systems Engineering approaches

In addition to the responsibilities above, the following technical competences and behaviours will be assessed at interview:
