Explosion & Impact Physics:
The team provides expertise on the design, function and performance of conventional warheads, spanning improvised explosive devices through to ‘generation after next’ missile warheads. The team also undertakes commercial activities, covering oil and gas, space exploration technology and general material response at high rate. The work is conducted using an integrated modelling and experiment approach to weapon development or assessment; predictions used to hone solutions and inform experimental test design; experimentation used to verify and validate weapon and modelling assumptions. The team members have backgrounds in physics and engineering who have developed a deep knowledge of analytical and hydrocode modelling, lethal mechanisms, trials design and conduct (set-up and data requirements) and data analysis.

What will I be doing?

The Research Scientist role is focused on supporting the delivery of projects.

You will undertake a variety of tasks, ensuring technical solutions meet business and customer requirements.

You will undergo training or briefing in a number of relevant areas; background science (weapon/shock physics, materials); computational physics (environment and software); experimental conduct.

The graduate role will have an emphasis on computational physics though there will be opportunities to assist in test planning and conduct at other QinetiQ locations.

Academic requirements:
You will need to have obtained a degree with a key focus on any of the disciplines listed below:

Physics

Mechanical Engineering

Materials Science

Mathematics (preferably with physics)

Additional requirements/desirables:
A mathematical or scientific grounding to A-level (depending on degree).

Familiarity with computing environments, programming languages or mathematical software such as MATLAB.
