Job overview

There is a post available in the busy Quality Control Chemistry Laboratory to cover maternity leave. It involves chemical testing of Sterile and Non-sterile products manufactured at the QMC campus and the testing and assessment of Unlicensed Medicines purchased for use in NUH.

Chemistry Technicians in Quality Control are based in the Pharmaceutical Quality Control Laboratory, F Floor, West Block, QMC Campus, and are responsible to the Head of Quality.

The Chemistry Technician is part of the Technical Team, which provides a Quality Control/Quality Assurance service to a number of NHS and Commercial clients. The Chemistry Technician will carry out a number of Chemical techniques in the testing of Pharmaceutical samples, and will

The Chemistry Technician will also assist in the routine calibration of laboratory equipment, and maintenance of reagent and stock levels.

All work must be carried out in accordance with both the Hospital and Departmental Health and Safety policies and in observance of the laboratory rules. All staff have a responsibility to take due care for the health and safety of themselves and their co-workers.

The post holder will be based at the QMC Campus

Main duties of the job

The post will involve:

Taking samples and carrying out chemical testing on raw materials and finished pharmaceutical products for compliance with the requirements of the British or European pharmacopoeias.

Carrying out assessments on unlicensed medicines for use within Nottingham University Hospitals.

The post may also require the post holder to carry out some work in the microbiology laboratory if required under the direction of the Senior Technicians

To carry out chemical testing and analysis of raw materials, intermediates, hospital manufactured products, commercial products and packaging materials against written Specifications and procedures and to keep appropriate records.

To carry out non-routine chemical testing e.g. stability testing, work for the Regional Quality Controller, and Pharmasure testing as and when required.

Communication of results to Pharmacy Production units, by phone, fax or Email as appropriate.

To collect or take samples of materials and products for testing as necessary.

To carry out weekly checks and calibrations of analytical equipment, under the guidance of the Senior Technicians.

To assist the Senior Technicians in the safe disposal of waste materials.

To assist where appropriate in the routine testing and maintenance of Quality Control and Manufacturing equipment.

To assist in keeping records and procedures up to date, and in compliance with GMP requirements.

To participate in the checking of environmental conditions within the laboratories.

To help maintain the laboratories in a clean and tidy condition under the direction of the Senior Technicians.

Responsible for stocktaking and maintaining levels of reagents, glassware and bought in consumable supplies, in the Chemistry Laboratory.

To ensure that the work of the laboratory is maintained according to set schedules and priorities, or to rearrange workloads as required in the absence of the Senior Technicians or their Deputies.

To participate in income generation contracts, and work for other departments on an ad hoc basis.

To participate in the development and validation of chemical procedures and techniques and to write up reports as required.

To assist the Senior Technicians in the training and supervision of the ATO staff.

To assist the Senior Technician in the filing and archiving of Certificates of Analysis relating to Laboratory equipment and media, and the analysis management information.

To carry out microbiological testing and monitoring as required.

To participate in competency checks within the laboratories e.g. , Pharmassure testing and Viewing tests.

To attend such courses as are considered relevant.

To undertake any other such duties as may become necessary, and as may reasonably be expected, in the provision of the Quality Assurance Service.

Training and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Educated to a minimum of BTEC or equivalent in Chemistry or Microbiology
  • Full driving licence

Communication

  • Excellent communication skills, written and oral

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experienced in a range of microbiological or analytical chemistry techniques and the use of analytical and/ or monitoring equipment.

Planning and organisational skills

  • Able to plan work to meet laboratory deadlines

Analytical and judgement skills

Essential criteria
  • Thorough and accurate work required for interpretation of laboratory results

Physical Skills

Essential criteria
  • Must have a good level of dexterity to carry out analytical and aseptic techniques
  • Must be fit and able to work within small spaces eg. LAF cabinets/ Isolators and fume cupboards and carry equipment

Salary: The quoted salary will be on a pro rata basis for part time workers.
