Job Description

It’s not every day that you can say that the work you do helps keep the UK safe, but that is just one of the unique benefits of securing a role within Rolls-Royce Submarines.

Founded in 1906, and quickly gaining a reputation for making the most famous cars and engines in the world, Rolls-Royce has evolved to a global provider of power to multiple customers across the world, and is now recognised as one of the world’s leading manufacturers of gas-turbine power systems for use on land, sea and in the air.

However, for over sixty years Rolls-Royce has been quietly designing, manufacturing and supporting in-service, the reactor plant that power the Royal Navy’s nuclear submarine fleet, while at the same time gaining a reputation as a provider of solutions for the civil nuclear industry.

Throughout this time, the company has been at the forefront of Britain’s nuclear power research and has played a key role in developing the country’s nuclear engineering capability. Because of the classified nature of most of this work, much has gone unreported, and though many residents of Derby will know of this association, very few in the country are fully aware of the Rolls-Royce nuclear power connection.

Since the late 1950’s, Rolls-Royce has designed, supplied and supported the nuclear plant that power and propel all of the UK Royal Navy’s nuclear submarines. Rolls-Royce Submarines Ltd is responsible for delivering the Nuclear Steam Raising Plant (NSRP), plus parts of the secondary propulsion systems to the UK Ministry of Defence.

A workforce of over 3000, based primarily in Derby, also manage these assets across their full lifecycle. This includes providing frontline support across the world for Royal Navy submarine reactor plant equipment from the Company’s Operations Centre in Derby. They also support the submarines when in the Barrow-in-Furness shipyard and the naval bases at Devonport and Faslane.

Due to a growing workload, we’re currently looking for a Process Engineer/Fluid System Design Engineer to undertake test rig design within our Experimental Engineering team in the Submarines business in Derby.

Our nuclear business is a leader in propulsion system design and development for the Royal Navy’s nuclear submarine fleet and the sole provider and technical authority, managing all aspects of plant design, safety, manufacture, performance and through-life support.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Process Engineerto work in an exciting area supporting the design of new multi-million pound test rig designs, and modifications to existing test rigs, most of which are located in our Centre of Excellence for Engineering Test Laboratory at our main offices at Raynesway in Derby. The bulk of the rigs are hot and pressurised water rigs.

Working in multi-discipline teams, working with internal resource, external design partners and equipment suppliers, you’ll work with like-minded mechanical and electrical engineers and our facilities/operations team to be the controlling mind and design intent owner for a range of different size rigs designed to deliver test data related to R&T, Verification and Validation, component qualification and through life performance requirements.

We are looking for an innovative individual who is a self-starter and is comfortable working under pressure, at pace, who can deal with ambiguity and is able to develop and agree requirements with a wide range of stakeholders and make trades in terms of requirements and design complexity. An ability to develop their own work scope and to work to process, whilst using their creativity to identify and exploit opportunities to drive time and cost out of programmes is necessary.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Generating requirements, scoping work, and planning tasks in conjunction with stakeholders.
  • Applying standard fluid flow and thermal hydraulic theory to inform and justify design decisions around system layout, component selection and sizing.
  • Integrate design and conventional health and safety principles, as well considerations from other disciplines, into credible technical arguments.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Experience, where possible, in a relevant, heavily regulated industry, such as Chemical, Pharmaceutical, Energy, Water or Nuclear.
  • Experience of specifying, designing, justifying or operating complex fluid/chemical process systems
  • Degree (or equivalent) in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, or another science or engineering discipline with thermo-fluids content.
  • Track record of delivering solutions against specific customer requirements to time, cost and quality.
  • Sound knowledge of engineering principles, process safety, and applicable codes & standards.
  • Understand of design process and design and safety assessment processes and tools eg HAZOPs/FMEAs

We offer excellent development, a competitive salary and exceptional benefits. These include bonus, employee support assistance and employee discounts.
