What is great about this opportunity?

Our team provide a high-quality homelessness prevention service to people who are in custody to ensure that we maximise their ability to sustain their tenancies. You will work closely with CRS (Community Rehabilitation Service) providers, Prison Resettlement teams, Local Authorities, landlords / letting agencies and benefit agencies to ensure good working relationships and partnership opportunities are developed.

Title:Prison Advice Worker

Contract:Full-time 37hr perm

Salary: £26,595.00

Location:Based at HMP Eastwood Park, but may be asked to cover other prisons within the remit of the project

Work Pattern:Hours are between Monday to Friday days, but full flexibility is required to meet the needs of the people we support and the service

Requirements:Full drivers licence and access to a vehicle.

Day To Day Duties

As a Prison Advice Worker your day will consist of:
  • Lone working within the prison environment
  • Meet with prisoners on the wings to discuss housing options available to them and explain the possible outcome of each option enabling them to make an informed decision about retaining their accommodation during the custodial term or relinquishing accommodation where it would not be viable to retain, particularly with regard to accrual of substantial and unaffordable rent arrears.
  • Develop relationships with appropriate support agencies and provide information and advice to the PRS landlords to encourage retention of accommodation
  • Reduce the number of prisoners requiring assistance from Local Authority Housing Options/Solutions departments to meet their duties and prevent homelessness (s66)
  • Support prisoners whilst in custody who have complex needs
  • Signpost prisoners with additional support needs to appropriate support agencies
  • Encourage prisoners to enter into payment plans with landlords to reduce rent arrears and reduce the likelihood of homelessness
  • Encourage those entering custody to prioritise retention of existing accommodation and raise awareness of the changing landscape for people leaving prison with no home to return to
  • Work closely with Local Authorities to ensure good working relationships and partnership opportunities are developed.
