Inpatient Services For People With Intellectual Disabilities –

Specialist Assessment and Treatment Services (SATs) & Adolescent Unit,

Brooklands Hospital, Marston Green, Birmingham

Principal Clinical Psychologist - Band 8b

Permanent – 0.8 WTE / 30 hours per week

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Clinical Psychologist to join the established Psychological Services team already inputting into the inpatient services for people with Intellectual Disabilities at Brooklands Hospital.

The Post Holder Will Provide Clinical Input To Adults And Young People In The Specialist Assessment And Treatment Service And The Adolescent Service At Brooklands Hospital And Will Provide
  • A lead role within the service
  • Specialist clinical assessment
  • Person-centred interventions (individual / group)
  • Care planning using a Positive Behavioural Support approach
  • Support to staff from other disciplines to undertake psychological interventions
  • Facilitation of team formulation and reflective practice sessions
  • Undertaking audit and research
  • Supervision and training for the psychological team and other professions
The successful post holder will have considerable post qualification experience. Experience of working with individuals whose behaviour presents a challenge to services is essential. Experience of working within an inpatient setting is highly desirable as is experience of working with people with autism. He/she will have clinically supervised other psychologists, effectively deployed resources and led on projects. Knowledge / experience of behavioural family therapy would also be advantageous.

Psychological input is highly valued by the multi-disciplinary team and there is an emphasis on close MDT working with colleagues from psychiatry, nursing, speech & language therapy, occupational therapy, music therapy and teaching.

The SATS and CAMHS Psychological Services team are part of a wider Psychological Services team on the Brooklands site. The psychology department is a well-established and supportive service and successful applicants will receive support to further develop their skills and knowledge, through good quality supervision and training opportunities. The team have a range of clinical interests and expertise in a variety of different therapeutic models including CBT, CAT, DBT, Compassion Focussed and Narrative approaches.

The service has strong links with local clinical psychology training courses and regularly provides placements for trainee clinical psychologists, supervision for research, and teaching on the local courses. There are also strong links with community learning disability teams across Coventry, Warwickshire and Solihull.
