Principal Cell Design Engineer

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Cell Designer to join a dynamic R&D technical department focused on battery technology.

Responsibilities will include:
  • Leading the development of state of the art lithium ion cell designs for automotive and other applications
  • Lead and grow a team responsible for cell design across a range of formats, materials, and applications
  • Owning cell designs, from initial concept development to A and B sample development
  • Working with electrode teams to develop state of the art anodes and cathodes to deliver cell level performance
  • Input into active material, binder, additive, separator, and electrolyte development and selection
  • Develop cell designs and strategies to deliver key cell performance characteristics, including energy density, power delivery, and fast charge rates.
  • Working with mechanical design team to deliver state of the art cell designs
  • Working with modelling teams to understand cell performance and use models to improve and increase speed of cell development process
  • Work with engineering teams to input into DFMEA, requirements, and other quality and development activities
  • Develop test and validation plans for characterising cells and prototypes
  • Work with prototyping teams to deliver prototypes, process data, feed back into the design process, and ultimately reach customer requirements

It is expected the Cell Development Engineer will have the following experience:
  • PhD or equivalent experience in an electrochemical cell development area
  • 3+ years developing lithium-ion cells in an industrial environment
  • Experience designing and developing cells in multiple formats (cylindrical, prismatic, pouch)
  • Experience designing cells with state-of-the-art materials (high Ni NCM, NMX, Si-anodes)
  • Experience using electrochemical testing techniques (EIS, cycling, GITT) to further understanding of cell performance, degradation, and ultimately improve on these metrics.
  • Experience taking cells through different stages of development up to mass production is preferred.
