Working with a vision of “delivering excellence in everything we do”, the Practice Development Lead (Wider workforce) will work with the Assistant Director of Nursing, Institute Clinical Lead (Education, workforce and Development) to provide professional leadership for care support workers, nursing apprenticeships and widening participation education and development, such as school events, prince’s trust and working with the job centers.

Main duties of the job

The PDL will lead innovation and development of education excellence for the care support workforce within nursing and midwifery. Including delivery of nursing apprenticeships and widening participation activities to enhance the skill, experience and education opportunity for our workforce.

The post holder will ensure an evidence based, robust and effective induction for new healthcare assistants and drive forward opportunities to increase skills and competence of this workforce.

The post holder will work closely with academic providers and community partners to ensure education needs are available and being met by learners, respond effectively to the learning needs of individuals and ensure apprenticeship regulations are maintained.

The PDL will review and strategically lead on the development of the wider workforce education strategy, induction of healthcare assistants and nationally core competencies for healthcare assistants, trainee nursing associates and nursing associates.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The PDL will be a strong clinical leader, easily identifiable, highly visible and accessible to corporate and divisional education leads, divisional nurses, senior midwifery leaders. He/she will have a particular responsibility to liaise with HEI partners and clinical teams to appropriately share and make decisions on learner assessment and progression. The PDL will work with the ADN and Institute clinical lead to respond effectively to concerns and complaints about public protection and learner performance in learning environments.

He/She will support service improvement by responding to the learning needs of the care support workforce. The post holder will ensure the active involvement of education leads, leads senior nurses and midwives in the way wider workforce learning and clinical support are developed, delivered and evaluated. Leading by example he/she will drive up standards of nursing apprenticeship and healthcare assistant education and have the authority to get the essential components of this right for learners –ensuring quality in experience , well-being and pastoral support. They will work in partnership with HEI partners to ensure robust governance systems and processes for apprentice education resolving problems and ensuring high standards are maintained throughout, ensuring NUH has a reputation as an education provider and employer of choice.

This post holder will need to be highly motivated, a skilled communicator and have evidence of a substantial understanding of apprenticeships, students and care support worker requirements. You will be a registered nurse, NMC registration with contemporary clinical experience in acute care nursing, a first degree and evidence of masters level study.

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Current professional registration with Nursing and Midwifery Council
  • 1st level registered nurse Teaching & Assessing Qualification
  • Degree level qualification or equivalent level of study
Desirable criteria
  • Masters Degree level qualification.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experienced in acute care settings at band 5 and 6
  • Experience of leading the implementation of complex practice learning strategies across multiple and diverse clinical teams
  • Leads and acts as a role model in clinical practice
  • Experienced practice supervisor and assessor with evidence of clinical leadership skills
  • Experienced at leading and supervising a team
  • Experienced supervisor and assessor of pre-registration students and other multi professional learners.
  • Experienced at providing staff and students with feedback on their individual performance
  • Demonstrate involvement and leadership in enhancing practice learning environment and developing students. Ability to manage the clinical area efficiently and effectively
  • Ability to convey sensitive information in an empathetic manner to students/learners, patients, relative/carers and staff.
Desirable criteria
  • Recent or current experience within practice learning across different specialities

Communication and Relationship Skills

  • Demonstration of team working and ability to work within a team

  • Experienced in leading, planning and delivering complex practice education programmes. Responds to changing complex education needs of learners and clinical services
  • Able to contribute to the development of implementation and monitoring of local objectives and plans

  • Lead on student / learner tariff overview, reporting and income generation from other learner placement activity.
