Location: Llandaff Campus with flexibility to work from home


Hours: 37 Hours per week


Tenure: This is fixed term post covering maternity Leave from 01.11.2021 to 28.02.23


Salary: £25,627 to £30,497 per annum

The Opportunity:

The Payroll/Pension Function is a dynamic and efficient integrated Professional Service Department ensuring that all University staff are paid accurately and on time adhering to strict monthly deadlines whilst complying with all statutory and University regulations.


You will be enthusiastic and passionate about payroll who is used to working to strict deadlines with particular attention to detail in a demanding environment, you will be able to work using your own initiative and can blend into our small payroll and pensions team and be able to deliver an exceptional service to all our staff. An effective communicator and computer literate individual to cover maternity leave.


What you’ll do – key duties

  • To ensure the timely processing of all payroll and pension related transactions (e.g., starters/leavers, any promotion or variation to duty of staff whilst complying with statutory and University regulations, meeting monthly deadlines).
  • To deal with all payroll related queries in a timely and efficient manner.
  • To ensure all applicable pay related deductions are made, including PAYE, National Insurance, pension contributions, and any other authorised deductions to third parties such as attachment of earnings, childcare vouchers, and cycle scheme etc.
  • Ensure all instructions in relation to University Policy and statutory legislation are adhered to and any non-compliance reported to Assistant Head of Payroll/ Head of Payroll and Pensions
  • To compile and reconcile all monthly deductions to third parties, sending relevant reports to appropriate contacts
  • Investigate and resolve any queries resulting from monthly payroll reports within agreed timescales by liaising with relevant internal and external contacts
  • Raise ad hoc special payments as and when required by employees
  • Accurately calculate, process and monitor all employees statutory and occupational entitlements (OSP, SSP, OMP, SMP, OPP, SPP).
  • Ensure compliance with both contractual and auto-enrolment pension administration
  • Maintain accurate records by the filing of all relevant paperwork in line with Audit requirement and the Data Protection Act 2018 and GDPR Regulations
  • To support the Head of Payroll and Pensions on payroll related projects and contribute to the improvement and streamlining of payroll processes.
  • To establish effective working relationships with key contacts, whilst maintaining confidentiality and professionalism at all times
  • To assist the Head of Payroll & Pensions with any other duties as instructed and commensurate with the post.

What you’ll bring – essential experience & strengths

  • Ability to prioritise and manage own workload
  • Excellent analytical and numerical skills and ability to pay particular attention to detail
  • IT skills, including data entry and Microsoft excel and word and report writing.
  • A commitment to teamwork and cross-departmental working
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Experience within a medium to large high volume payroll department with complex terms and conditions of employment.
  • Organising and planning work to meet deadlines
  • Ideally experience of using ITrent HR Payroll System – whilst this is not essential , it would be preferable
