The Opportunity

Cardiff School of Education and Social Policy has an increasing national and international reputation for excellence and offers a diverse and stimulating range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in education, humanities and social policy. Based primarily on the Cyncoed campus, we work collaboratively with external partners, schools and organisations to ensure our programmes are discipline specific, innovative and professionally relevant. Many of our programmes have work placements embedded in them to ensure we prepare students appropriately for the job market or to further their academic study. The wellbeing of our staff, students and our local community underpins everything we do as we continue to add value through our teaching, innovation and research. As part of our continued growth strategy we seek to appoint an enthusiastic, well-qualified academic who will contribute to the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes within their discipline whilst also contributing to and enhancing the research reputation of the School.

To be successful you will further enrich our students’ experience through your expertise and subject knowledge as evidenced through your qualifications and experience.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities


You will be required to make a significant contribution to the delivery of our taught portfolio contributing to the delivery of the BA (Hons) Primary Education with QTS and PGCE Primary programmes and other areas of our core curriculum depending on your areas of expertise and experience. Enthusiastic about student-centred pedagogy, you will contribute to education delivery, including programme management as required, across the range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. You will also make a significant contribution to employability, and professional engagement with relevant internal and external organisations, at a regional, national and international level.

You will be expected to contribute to the research profile of the School and to meet the qualitative and quantitative requirements for submission to the next Research Excellence Framework.


What we are looking for -Experience & Strengths

An in-depth knowledge relevant to the subject and professional area.

Evidence of undertaking continuous professional development (CPD).

An in-depth understanding of pedagogy.

An in-depth understanding of research and scholarly activity.

Ability to design, develop and deliver a range of programmes at postgraduate levels.

Ability to review programme design on a regular basis to ensure compliance with quality standards and academic regulations and to make alterations where appropriate.

Ability to contribute to the achievement of the School Strategic Enabling Plan and the institution’s strategic planning processes.

Ability to identify opportunities for strategic development/improvement e.g. new courses, consultancy.

Ability to identify (through the analysis of appropriate management information) areas requiring improved performance e.g. student numbers, student satisfaction.

Ability to take responsibility for a number of key areas such as Chairing and participating in School and Institutional committees, leading projects.

Ability to communicate and disseminate complex and conceptual ideas in a variety of ways – presentations, reports, learning materials, results of scholarly activity, feedback etc. to a wide variety of audiences.

Ability to lead and contribute to the development of teams to ensure effective and productive working relationships.

Ability to lead/develop/work collaboratively with a number of internal and external networks, e.g. professional associations, external examiners.

Ability to plan workloads and projects and manage resources effectively.

Ability to provide professional advice to a wide range of stakeholders.

Ability to undertake administrative duties in an accurate and timely fashion.

Ability to communicate using everyday Welsh at a level consistent with primary curriculum requirements.

Ability to work collaboratively on research projects through the development of appropriate partnerships.


What we are looking for - Essential Qualifications

A good honours degree in a relevant area.

Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

Ability to achieve Fellow Status as part of the Higher Education Academy’s Professional Recognition scheme, within a 3-year period.

Membership of a professional body.

An earned doctoral level qualification.
