The postholder will be involved in the reception of samples and accurately entering patient and sample information onto the laboratory IT systems.

The postholder will be responsible for various laboratory “housekeeping” duties including regular defrosting of laboratory fridges and freezers, cleaning laboratory glassware and cleaning/sterilising laboratory areas.

The postholder will also be involved in stock control procedures for laboratory consumables.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

With reference to SOP to undertake a range of technical duties , including processing of patient samples for storage or extraction of DNA.

Collecting samples from pathology reception, sorting through samples and entering details of patient/sample on to the laboratory computer system in an accurate and timely fashion.

Routine cleaning/maintenance of laboratory equipment and laboratory areas.

Regular de-frosting and cleaning of laboratory fridges and freezers.

Logging incubator and fridge/freezer temperatures throughout the laboratory areas.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GCSE (or equivalent) Grade C or above in English, Mathematics and a Science. Interested in Genetics
Desirable criteria
  • BSc in Genetics or a Biological science. Interested in working in Genetics in an NHS environment

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Computer literacy. Able to demonstrate an organised and methodical approach to tasks. Laboratory experience.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of handling pathological specimens and aseptic techniques. Familiar with Laboratory IT systems. Familiar with NHS processes.

Salary: The quoted salary will be on a pro rata basis for part time workers.

  • Disclosure and Barring Service: Your post maybe subject to a DBS check which incur a cost dependent on the level of check required (£45 for enhanced and £28 for standard). I agree to reimburse Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust the cost of a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check if it is required (by deduction from first month’s pay). Should I decide to withdraw from my job offer, I agree to reimburse Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust the cost of the DBS check undertaken by cheque or other agreed method.
