Job Description


Working hours are Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm. Please note that an occasional Saturday may also be worked.

As a Medical Laboratory Assistant you will samples for analysis using the current laboratory protocol, to assist Biomedical Scientists in maintenance and preparation of equipment. You will also help to maintain adequate levels of reagents and consumables, laboratory cleaning duties and dispose of waste.

Duties include:

  • To receive blood samples.
  • Sort and identify specimens received.
  • Register patient details and tests required on the laboratory computer.
  • Prepare samples where appropriate for analysis.
  • Maintain laboratory and ensure workbenches are clean and tidy.
  • Safely handle and dispose of blood, urine or other body tissues or hazardous chemicals.
  • Prepare referral samples for external laboratory analysis.
  • Advise users of the service on appropriate testing protocols.
  • Enter test results on the laboratory computer system and preparation of samples for analysis under supervision of the BMS(s).
  • Use and operate equipment such as centrifuges, automated equipment, pipettes and computer terminals in accordance to the laboratory SOPs.
  • Unpack and prepare reagents in accordance to the SOPs.
  • Communicate any event which may cause service delivery failure.
  • Deal with telephone enquires internally.
  • Help in ensuring that the laboratory meets the requirements of CPA/UKAS.

Qualifications
  • Qualified to degree level in biomedical sciences or related field
  • Knowledge of Pathology laboratory would be beneficial
  • Ability to use LIMS system
  • Experience of working with a range of biological samples
  • Experience in MS Office, Excel, and word
  • Previous stock management experience would be beneficial
  • Ability to follow SOPs and instructions
  • Great Attention to detail
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills
  • Strong organisational, multi-tasking and time management skills
  • Committed to customer care
  • Flexible attitude to work
