MEDICAL DEVICES SAFETY OFFICER (Band 8B)

NUH are seeking to recruit to the senior post of a MEDICAL DEVICES SAFETY OFFICER; this is an exciting opportunity to play a leading strategic and operational role in ensuring the optimal & safe usage of medical devices across the Trust - this should appeal to somebody with significant expertise in medical technologies and a keen interest in the practicalities of their effective applications in healthcare

The post-holder will act as the medical devices safety lead within Clinical Engineering and be the Medical Devices Safety Officer (MDSO) for the Trust, performing a lead role in the promotion, management and continual improvement of Trust-wide organisational systems & practices for ensuring safety across the whole spectrum of medical devices usage.

Main duties of the job

Operationally this will include the supervision & application of information systems to support Trust-wide oversight and improvement of medical devices safety management, including event reporting & data analysis – and management of untoward incident investigations and safety notices relating to medical devices.

The post-holder will be a key driver of device-related organisational strategy via active membership of the relevant NUH safety and medical device governance Committees and subsidiary Groups, and will lead the Trust’s Medical Devices Safety Committee. Duties also include responsibility for the operational management of the Medical Devices Safety Unit, and generally being a source of expert advice on all aspects medical devices safety - to support clinical staff, patients and technical / scientific services in maximising the benefits and minimising the risks associated with their use of medical devices.

The MDSO will be the Trust’s point-of-contact for engagement with regulatory authorities, device manufacturers & other external stakeholders on matters of medical devices safety.

This role would suit a professionally registered healthcare engineer / scientist having significant experiential background in the use of medical devices in healthcare delivery, together with a strong theoretical and practical understanding of medical device technologies, and a sound appreciation of medical device issues from the perspectives of clinical colleagues, patients and careers. The post-holder should have excellent reporting & communication skills, and a demonstrable passion for quality & safety in healthcare provision.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Clinical Engineering department, part of the wider Medical Physics & Clinical Engineering service, is one of the largest in the country, offering a diverse range of medical device related services both to the Trust and external customers. It has collaborative links within the medical device industry, with academia and with other healthcare providers. The department is actively involved in clinical research, medical device development, technology transfer and specialist consultancy – as well as providing the comprehensive medical technology management, clinical training and safety management services fundamental to the delivery of healthcare by the Trust.This post is based within the Medical Devices Specialist Services section, comprising a multi-disciplinary team of experienced healthcare scientists / engineers, technologists and nurses that offers a diverse range of medical device related services, including those provided by the Medical Devices Safety Unit.

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Engineering / scientific qualification to Masters level (or equivalent), & further specialist post-qualification training
  • HCPC (Clinical Scientist) registration (or eligibility)
  • Chartered Engineer / Scientist (or eligibility)
Desirable criteria
  • NHS Clinical Scientist STP training (or training completed to equivalent predecessor schemes)
  • Advanced professional development / qualifications in safety management / human factors

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Substantial experience of medical devices applications, governance & safety in healthcare
  • Sound & extensive knowledge of medical technology & associated fields
  • Sound & extensive knowledge of the regulatory environment relating to the use of medical technology in healthcare

Analytical and Judgement skills

Essential criteria
  • Work autonomously in specialist analysis and formulation of expert opinion
  • Expert interpretation & practical application of regulatory requirements and specialist guidance
  • Ability to analyse, process & report complex test results
  • Ability to undertake serious untoward incident investigations and to critically assess safety alerts relating to medical devices

Planning and organisation skills

Essential criteria
  • Plan & manage programmes of work & services that impact not just within own service and other services Trust-wide, involving a wide range of other professionals
